Hello holdennt-ga,
I love my iPod, but I truly hate the hair pulling issues that can come
up with them. I had a 20g iPod which started appearing as a removable
drive, and would not be recognized by iTunes. I simply followed these
directions from Apple.com and tada, it was back in iTunes.
Follow the directions, then try to use iTunes again, if this doesn't
work, request a clarification and we will work from there.
These directions are taken from Apple.com.
Putting iPod into Disk Mode
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93651
"1. Before manually placing the iPod into Disk Mode you should verify
that it has a charge, if not you need to either charge iPod before
continuing or connect it to power. You can either connect it to a
high-powered USB port, or plug the iPod Power Adapter into an
electrical outlet and connect iPod to the power adapter.
2. Toggle the Hold switch on and off. (Set it to Hold, then turn it off again.)
3. Press and hold the Menu and Select buttons for at least 6 seconds
until the Apple logo appears.
4. When the Apple logo appears, release the Menu and Select buttons
and immediately press and hold the Select and the Play/Pause buttons
until the Disk Mode screen appears.
5. Disconnect iPod from the power adapter and connect it to your
computer; the screen on the iPod will change and say "Do not
disconnect"
If you are having difficulty putting an iPod model with a Click Wheel
into Disk Mode, set the iPod on a flat surface. Make sure that the
finger pressing the Select button is not touching the Click Wheel.
Also make sure that you are pressing the Play/Pause button toward the
outside of the Click Wheel and not near the center.
If you are still unable to put your iPod with a Click Wheel into Disk
Mode, use one finger from one hand to press the Select button, and one
finger from the other hand to press the Play/Pause button."
This of course can also be used in reverse to switch from Hard Drive
mode back to iPod mode.

So I have put my iPod into disk mode and then reconnected it to my
computer. I have tried this twice and my computer still does not
recognize my iPod. Is there any other clarification I can provide....

I have tried the disk mode and most of the solutions on the Apple
website and have had no luck. Believe me, that was the first place I
checked...

When you reloaded the iTunes software, did you remove it through the
Microsoft Add/Remove programs panel, or just delete?
Also, make sure the iPod is not still in disk mode.
While i'm asking more questions, when you disconnect the iPod, does it
work? If not what screen is showing on the iPod?

"When you reloaded the iTunes software, did you remove it through the

I removed the program through Add/Remove programs panel.
"Also, make sure the iPod is not still in disk mode."
I put it back to the regular iPod mode before I tried reconnecting.
"While i'm asking more questions, when you disconnect the iPod, does it
work? If not what screen is showing on the iPod?"
When I disconnect the iPod it works fine. It goes back to the first menu screen.

I know you said you went through all of the Apple.com links,
however...I just want to be sure.
Have you tried the information at this link from Apple.com?

Hopefully this worked and you are out running for joy with your iPod
and that is why you have not returned.

Hi Holdennt-ga,
I was truly hoping you were out running with your iPod.
Meantime, I'm thinking rather then being an iPod issue perhaps there
is a cable issue or a port issue.
So, is the iPod charging when it is connected to the computer?
Also, have you tried inserting the USB into a second USB port?
Last, have you tried connecting to someone else's computer?
As a weird attempt. I also use a secondary piece of freeware software
called YAMiPod. I use this constantly to transfer music from my iPod
to secondary computers. This allows me to have my music on my work
computer, my home computer, my wife's computer and my laptop. Just
make sure iTunes is not running, then run the YamiPod software. It is
a very similar interface and once running this will let us know if you
have an iPod issue, or an iTunes issue.

Ok, so my iPod isn't recognized by other computers. And also I tried
the YamiPod program and that doesn't recognize the iPod either. When
I open up the My Computer folder it shows a Removable Disk (F:) drive.
I'm not sure if it's supposed to recognize the iPod or not....
I would be happy to provide any more clarification. Can' wait until
we figure this out.....

YamiPod should see the iPod right away, this combined with the fact
that the other computer also doesn't see your iPod brings this down to
the cable and the iPod itself. I really can't recommend anything else
past trying a second cable (if someone else has an iPod you could just
connect quick) and if that fails, you will need to bring your iPod to
the nearest Apple store.
Apple stores take tech calls by appointment, so you can schedule the
time and date you will be there. You can't walk in off the street to
have them check your iPod, but they will check it for free.
