Have you tried Microsoft SDK 5.1? They provided several C++ examples
that uses the SDK.

If you have MSDN you can refer to the samples from the following path
in the drive in which MSDN has been installed. This folder contains
all the audio samples and one of them is infact a sample for recognize
speech. This application recognizes 1,2,3,4,...10
replace <YYYYMon> with the year and month of MSDN Example 2001Jan
Program Files\Microsoft Visual
Studio\MSDN\<YYYYMon>\1033\SAMPLES\VC98\sdk\graphics
