How many hospitals in the US do pediatric heart transplants ?

This information is harder to find than you would expect. After
extensive searching I found a journal article that stated there are 23
major pediatric heart transplant programs. I next tried to find a
listing of these but couldn?t locate one. Instead, I?ve prepared a
list of 35 pediatric heart transplant facilities.

Heart assist pump shows promise for children awaiting transplant

Using the Pediatric Heart Transplant Study (PHTS) database, a
prospective study of pediatric heart transplant sites in North
America, they reviewed 2,375 children who needed heart
transplantation.   Researchers searched the database for patients who
had VADs and contacted those centers to ask about specific information
on those patients.  They found that 18 of the 23 centers were using
the device and a total of 99 pediatric patients had a VAD placed
during the 10-years of data collection ? between January 1993 and
December 2003.

In an accompanying editorial, David Rosenthal, M.D. and Daniel
Bernstein, M.D., both of Stanford University, noted that there are
about 350 pediatric heart transplants performed in the United States
annually.   However, it is striking that there were only 99 pediatric
VAD placements at 23 major centers during this study.
