Hello Victorj7.

The name "Dr. John" came from a legendary Louisiana voodoo
practitioner from the start of the 19th century.

?Dr. John is the stage name of Malcolm John Rebennack Jr.?
 ...

?Rebennack gained fame beginning in the late 1960s and early 1970s,
with music that combined New Orleans-style rhythm and blues with
psychedelic rock and stage shows that bordered on voodoo religious
ceremonies, including elaborate costumes and headdress. For a time he
was billed as Doctor John, The Night Tripper. The name "Dr. John" came
from a legendary Louisiana voodoo practitioner from the start of the
19th century.?

In the mid 1960's he went to Los Angeles and assumed the persona of
Dr. John Creux, the Night Tripper.

?It was during that period, in Los Angeles, that he developed the
persona of Dr. John Creux, The Night Tripper, who distinguished
himself through an intoxicating brew of voodoo incantations and his
New Orleans heritage. Dr. John quickly built an underground following
both for the music and for his live stage antics, which found him
conducting ceremonial-type events in full Mardi Gras costume."
