Answer two of the following three questions with an essay of about 500
words each.
1. Although the so-called ?Nick Adams? stories were not written in any
particular order and were never thought of by Hemingway as forming a
single, coherent story, they do seem to portray the events in the life
of a single, always recognizable character. Using the stories as your
reference point, write an essay agreeing or disagreeing with the
statement below. Your answer should rely on biographical material you
have read as well as the stories themselves.
Ernest Hemingway, through the stories with the character, Nick Adams,
has drawn a more honest portrayal of himself?his fears, internal
dilemmas, character?than you can find in his letters, his memoirs or
what he revealed about himself to his parents, friends and wives.
2. With regard to Hemingway?s method of creating emotion by providing
mostly a surface beneath which was the story itself, write a critical
analysis of The Sun Also Rises in which you describe this method?s
success or failure. In other words, did Hemingway succeed in making
you feel the emotional impact of the people and situations by
understating them, or did you end up feeling as if you were unable to
ever get beyond the tip of the iceberg? Provide concrete examples
from the book to support your answer.
3. There are a multitude of reasons evident in his life and his
writing for Hemingway?s deep attraction to Spain, to the peculiarities
of Spanish culture at the time he experienced it, and to bullfighting.
Write an essay explaining your theory of why Spain had such a
lifelong appeal to Hemingway as a man and as a writer. |
