Is there a master list or way of determining whether a movie has been
released on DVD or not. I am interested in finding out if some movies
I owned on VHS have made the jump to DVD? Perhaps it has been released
and is now out of print.

Please take a look at the Internet Movie Database DVD search and let
me know if this suits your purpose:

Looking forward to your clarification.

Best regards,
Rainbow

so far i have not been able to find one main source for dvd releases,
this may be due to the fact that the different production companies
ie. miramax, fox, disney and so on dont release info on one main
site---- so the best sight i have found is called dvd planet at
dvdplanet.com- you may want to check videoeta.com - they have it all
however they focus on dvd's and also have a search box.
