I would like to know the price hike in cigarettes from 1969 to the
present. I am trying to estimate how much my husband's habit has cost
him through the years.

The total cost of a pack of cigarettes includes tax, which varies
greatly from place to place. In what nation and which state or
province does your husband live? Do you need data for "premium" brand
cigarettes, or "generics"?

Cigarette prices from 1993 to 2002 are given at
US Cigarette Price Increases 1993-2002
http://tobaccofreekids.org/research/factsheets/pdf/0091.pdf

For the earlier years I used
Table 43--U.S. producer price index for cigarettes, filter, 1973-95
http://usda.mannlib.cornell.edu/data-sets/specialty/94012/1/TAB043.WK1
(I had to do a little math to correlate the producer price indices
with the retail prices given above, and for 1969-1972 I extrapolated
back).

As noted above, taxes vary from state to state. Depending on how the
prices you have paid recently in your state compare to these figures,
you might add or subtract some when you do your total.

The total cost for one pack a day is about $15,000!

We live on Long Island, in New York, and do not pay NYC taxes.
However, when you add the state and federal taxes tax to the prices
you listed, that $15,000 total goes way up. Could you refigure that
for me? I would appreciate it. Then the next google questions are
"How do I get him to quit"? and how much do I have to pay for an
answer to those two? Guess those answers are priceless!!!

Hello again:

Please let me know what you have been paying per pack in 1999, 2000,
2001 and currently, and I'll adjust all the figures.

Thanks!

Richard-
Can you believe my husband says he can't remember the prices he paid
in the past three years?I swear the smoke must still be in his head!!!
He thinks $4.75 (1999), $5.00 (2000) and $4.75 (2001)

Thanks for sticking with this. You must think I'm crazy. But I'm like a
dog with a bone over this issue.
