Question ID: 757038
I want to buy a new flat screen monitor. Unfortunately, I have small
Grandchildren who love to touch the screen during use. Their touching
has not seemed to hurt my old CRT monitor. My question is: will the
constant light pressure finger touching damage the flat screen
monitor? Am I better off with a CRT type monitor until the kids mature
enough to be able to keep their hands off the screen? Thanks.

I use a laptop with LCD and I have had people touch the screen, now
although personally I do not like this I have found that lightly
touching the screen does not harm it, sticky fingers do not harm it,
HOWEVER if someone touches the screen really hard or uses a sharp
impliment to touch it with this can cause damage.

What happens is that when the LCD screen is touched hard the liquid
(or gel) bursts from within the screen, this causes dead pixels and
obviously bad images.

The short answer is

Light touching - NO
Hard / sharp touching - YES.

If you don't think they will touch it hard it might be worth getting
an LCD, if you don't think you can trust them, why not get a 15 inch
CRT screen for a cheap price and let the children use that?

Does this answer your question?

Hi doubleeagledreamer,

Another option is to get a touch-screen monitor.

You do not need to pay me, once I submit my answer the payment is

if you feel the answer that a researcher gave you warrants such a kind
act.

You could get a glare guard to provide a phyiscal barrier and still
allow them to see the screen?

Some plasma screens get very hot, hot enough to burn or blister.
Your grandchildren will soon learn etc......;-)

It depends:
If your grandchildren touch it hard, will be damaged, else, no. Does
this answer your question?
