Question ID: 757185
I'm looking for a forum, preferably vbulletin style. I've been a
frequent visitor of forum from the trickology.com site now under the
name of tehbored.com. I feel I've grown out of this. Although, I still
enjoy the board. I'm looking for something more diverse and adult
membership. I then stumbled on www.styleforum.net which is real cool.
It is almost what I wanted. They discusss general stuff, politics,
health, style, music, women, career, books, technology, finance etc.
It is well rounded but most of the activity is fashion. This meaning
the post count in the fashion forums is much higher than even the
general forum. I'm looking for something more evened out. I checked
out the askmen and GQ forums, however, I'm looking for something more
independant. Is there anything out there?

marcus...

See what you think of this site, which a colleague recently suggested
as an 'adult' myspace type of site:
http://www.gather.com/

Let me know what you think...

Gather is a great idea. I don't really sense a community. There is too
much classification. I prefer the vbulletin format.

marcus...

I just came across The WELL, one of the first online communities,
and full of variety like you wouldn't believe. It costs $10-15
per month for a membership, but apparently it's worth the level
of content you'll find:
http://www.well.com/

Let me know if this suits your needs...

Yeah, there's more-- go out into the 3-D world and get some sun on
your mush before you grow mushrooms.

I am very fond of the Straight Dope Message Board. Lots of smart,
funny folks, interesting topics, and lively discussions. There's an
annual fee of fifteen bucks, but guest memberships are free for 30
days:

Gather seems pretty cool idea but I don't like the format. I don't
labelling to that extent.

I think straightdope more in my direction, especially the debate
section. I'm trying get a handle on the members.

Straight Dope is almost there. I need a better mixture young and old people.

Can you be more precise about the kind of age mixture you seek? The
Straight Dope boards have participants whose ages range from early
teens to late seventies. It is a group where one's age is of little
import.

I was looking for something with male issues. Stuff like technology,
women, and sports but also some worldly issues which this board has.

Two reccomendations. http://www.markforumsvb.com fits your
description, but not everyone there is quite "sophisticated" yet.

My other reccomendation is http://forums.moture.net, a great forum,
nice adult environment but it's not "general", it's music orientated.
:-)

Hope they help.

Thanks for the suggestions. I don't think those work for me. The
second one is strictly music. Like you said, I want something more
general. The first one doesn't have much range either.

I'm not trying be highbrow. Maybe, sophisticated may be the wrong. I
want a forum that varies from discussions about to southeast Asia's
economic impact in the next five years to a favorite episode of Family
Guy. Maybe, this is pure fantasy. Anymore suggestions would be
helpful.

Thanks for the suggestion. It's kind of like the bored but with less members.

Is there any more help out there? Is my price too low for help?

marcusvaughn-ga,

It is always a good idea to raise your question price to get more
attention. Good luck!

Anybody, is this that difficult of a question? I'm looking for a
well-rounded forum that can be fun and discuss serious issues... Time
is running out

You might find Fathom to be interesting. But it's not particularly male-oriented.

The IGN boards are predominantly male. I don't know about the
sophistication element, but there are some bright people there:

After I saw that Larry Brilliant was the new CEO of google.org, I
remembered a cool online community I was a member of called
Brainstorms. The founder is Howard Rheingold, an associate of Larry
Brilliant. Larry founded "The Well" and Howard "Brainstorms" --the
difference? Brainstorms is free, although donations are always
welcome.

The forum is not vbulliten style, they use caucus. It's a GREAT
community. These are intelligent folks, no smart-assed kids, flaming,
period. Discuss any topic imagniable.
