Hello dougburdon:

Well, I've been working on your question for some time now, and I must
admit it has been a challenging search. Statistics are not readily
available on doctors with "dual licensing" between Canada and the
United States. To find them takes a lot of digging through various
(un)related websites and news stories.

However, I was able to find 70 doctors that are licensed to practice
in both countries. I have listed them below, sorted by alphabetical
order (by last name). You will notice that the large majority of the
names below are from Maine. This was because I was able to find a
large list on the website of a Maine Senator candidate (Chellie
Pingree).

Much of the information I was able to find centered around the current
trend of United States citizens coming to Canada to get their medicine
at much lower costs. In order to do so, they need a prescription from
a doctor who is licensed in Canada.

Hello Douglas:

Thank you for your clarification request and your understanding.
Hopefully we can work together to gather the complete information you
want. :-)

To find a "comprehensive list --- from each or at least most of the
states", one that is current, we are going to have to find a database
with that sort of licensing information that we (or someone else on
our behalf) can tap into. I am pretty sure (given my earlier
searching) that no such database is readily publically available
through the Web. This does not mean that such a database doesn't exist
somewhere.

The next step will be to move "beyond" search into some other
techniques. Before I start this in earnest, I need you to provide me
with some information:

* Have you contacted any other organizations asking for this
information and, if so, what were the results of those enquiries.

* Do you have access to any databases or websites that the general
public does not?

* (If your willing/able to tell me) why are you seeking this
information?

* If the information can be compiled by others through other means,
what would you be willing to pay for this service? (In many market
research-like queries, the research has already been done by others,
but their reports cost $$$.)

Google Answers is a new service, and everyone is just getting used to
how it works. One key thing that I've noticed helps a lot is when the
person asking the question provides as much information as possible
about what methods they've already tried and what information they
already have.

Hi Douglas:

I just wanted to give you a brief update of where my investigations
stand to date...

I decided to start with looking to *national* medical organizations
for the data you require. I figure that they would be the best bet for
finding *comprehensive* listings that wouldn't require extensive (and
possibly impossible) cross-checking.

To date I have contacted:

* American Medical Association (AMA)
* National Institutes of Health (NIH)
* Canadian Medical Association (CMA)
* Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada 
* The Pingree Election campaign (they must have compiled the
information they have somehow!)

To date I have received replies only from the NIH and AMA - both
saying they don't have access to dual-license data and both sending me
to other organizations on the above list.

I want to give these national organizations a few more days before I
move onto the next steps in my research plan, which include contacting
state/provincial organizations (next step).

My goal is to get your information (if possible) with the minimum
amount of additional cost/hassle for you.

Hi Douglas:

Time for another update. 

I have had little luck hearing back from the national organizations
that I have contcted on your behalf. Since the last update I did,
however, hear from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of
Canada. They did not have the information you need, but suggested I
try contacting their provincial counterparts.

I have sent email requests to the Colleges for Ontario, New Brunswick,
and Alberta. If these organizations can provide information, I will
approach all other provinces. If this path fails, then I'll start
trying state organizations.

I still feel our best chance to either find the information you need -
or find out where to find it - lies with the Pingree campaign people.
However, they have not responded to my cries for help. They are likely
very busy with the November election.... :-)

I will keep trying and keep updating you regularly.

Hi Douglas:

No sooner had I posted the previous update, then I got a *very
helpful* email response from the College of Physicians and Surgeons of
New Brunswick. They have a serchable doctor database that lists
location of the doctor's current practice.

CPSNB Membership Database User Form 
http://www.cpsnb.org/webdata/drdbase_form.shtml

If you scroll down to the form and select the region "Other (non NB)"
and click "Search", you will get a list of 342 non-New-Brunswick
located doctors who are licensed in NB. Most of these are in the
states, with a large number in neighbouring Maine. This is a much
better listing than the one on the Pingree site as it contains their
specialties and many, many more listings.

As well, on the search page you can select a specific set of
specialties to narrow the search results.

While this tells us which U.S. doctors have licenses in NB, it does
not tell us the opposite. I've asked for clarification and will
continue with further updates.

Hi Again Douglas:

Well, the information is coming fast and furious. 

The website for the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario 

http://www.cpso.on.ca

also has a doctor search facility that lists current practice
locations for doctors licensed in Ontario. *Unfortunately*, the
information in that database is *not* sortable by locations outside of
Ontario. This means that you would have to manually scroll through all
the names of doctors to see whether each one is practising in the U.S.

I went to their Advanced search page at: 

http://www.cpso.on.ca/Doctor_Search/adv_srch.asp?SCR=FIRST

and looked for all the doctors with a last name starting with Q (just
put "Q" in the "Last Name:" field and click "Start Search"). There
were 94 doctors listed - 8 of whom are practising in the U.S.

There are 1542 doctors listed with names starting with "A" and 1691
doctors with names starting with "D" - so you can imagine how much
work would be involved finding all those in the U.S. However, if we
assume that even 5% of the doctors listed are now in the U.S., your
looking at a potential list of over 1000 dual licensed doctors there
alone.

I've had a pretty thorough look at the U.S. state equivalents on the
Canadian "Colleges" and must say they were little to no help. I think
your best bet is to stick with the Canadian province sites, such as
listed at:

Many of these sites have physician search engines that list current
practice addresses.

No I do not have access to any outside database. No I have no asked
anyone else to work on this research. I am developing an online
service to offer Canadian perscription drugs to Americans so they can
enjoy major savings. To do this correctly I need to have doctors who
are licensed in Canada review the American perscriptions and then
'counter sign' them following review. This means that it is most
desirous to find USA docs who also hold a Canadian license -- and even
better if we know that it is a Quebec/Can license.

Yes - I am prepared to pay for the work.

I'm glad you're pleased with the follow-up. 

Unfortunately, it is strictly forbidden for Google Answers Researchers
to contact customers outside of the GA service. (That is, you are not
allowed to know *who* I am nor deal with me directly. This would be
seen as a way for customers/researchers to bypass GA, cutting them out
of the loop and the $$$.)

As well, there currently is no method for answering questions on GA so
that the results are not visible to the general public - i.e., no
"private questions".

As much as I (and the other researchers here) would like to continue
helping you with this search, the only method available to us would be
for you to publicly submit further questions (addressed specifically
to me, or to the researcher population in general) to which the
answers would be publicly accessible.

If you can find a program similiar to the old DOS FileCompare, and get
all those results into a text file, then request lists from the US med
associations (which are public knowledge, just a little hard to find
sometimes) compare, pull up the same records... There ya have a  list
of all DL doctors :)
