Question ID: 75742
Here's what I've got:
*Windows 2000 with a DSL connection via Intel 3200 USB (HOST)
 IP assigned to NIC: 192.168.0.1
*Mac OS 10.1 (CLIENT)
 IP assigned to NIC: 192.168.0.2
Router (Mac term for Gateway): 192.168.0.1

Connected via a crossover cable, both have same gateway.

Here's what I can do:
From HOST, "ping www.usu.edu"
message "pinging 129.123.41.190..." and all is fine.
From CLIENT, "ping 129.123.41.190" and all is fine.
From CLIENT, "ping www.usu.edu" and I get "Unknown Host".

I've tried 192.168.0.1, the DNS entries from the HOST, and other DNS
entries (as well as no entry) on the CLIENT and nothing I seem to do
allows me to resolve host names.

The bottom line is I can't browse the interenet on the CLIENT computer
as I get a "Host Unknown" error. Any ideas?

Hi barrycroker,

DNS problems sure are aggravating, aren't they?

If you enter 192.168.0.1 as the mac's DNS server, you will need to be
running DNS services on the windows machine. Since you can ping IP
numbers from the mac, you should be able to add the appropriate DNS
servers on the mac and things will work fine.

Try adding 144.92.104.20 and 208.142.228.10 as the primary and
secondary nameservers on the mac - both these provide public DNS
services.

If that doesn't work, you can run a DNS server on the Windows machine
with no trouble. Search Google for "windows DNS server" and you will
come across, among others, the following:
Simple DNS Plus, demo available: http://www.jhsoft.com/
Name Server Software: Windows:
http://www.dns.net/dnsrd/servers/windows.html
DeEnesse DNS server, demo available:
http://www.cyberspacehq.com/products/Deenesse/home.shtm

Is that enough, or do you need more specific instructions? If so, let
me know more specifically what you've gotten so far, or where the
above suggestions have failed for you, and I'll get back to you.

Your suggestion was pretty good but seemed like too much work...I mean
MS ships thousands of copies of Windows that use Internet Conection
Sharing and never is installing a DNS server mentioned (not that I
didn't try it first though...)
I felt pretty stuipd when I looked at my firewall's activty log and
noticed a large amount of BLOCKED UDP traffic originating from my
Mac...a few firewall entries and I'm up and running.
Good suggestion, sorry I had to waste both our time with such a dumb
problem!

A firewall! I should have thought of that - I've done the same thing
myself, but not under Windows. Glad things are working for you again
regardless.

Good, friendly help but it didn't help becasue the problem was in an
unrelated area...that I figured out later and felt really stupid
about!

Your Intel USB device is not the default adaptor on your client machine?
(a guess)

Sorry I didn't get back sooner, I keep getting an error when I try to
log into google answers...
Anyway, my HOST has an on-board NIC card as it's primary connection,
and then the Intel 3200 is a USB-based DSL modem (which happens not to
be Mac compatable). The CLIENT has only an on-board NIC.
