I did several searches for you and have summed my research up in the
following three blocks, all with different numbers. There does not
seem to be a definitive recent poll on this, but hopefully you will
find something you can use below:
Data for Southern California: LA County
"20% of gun owners admit to carrying a loaded gun in their car"

Since there are 6,537,054 people in Southern California and 24% of
these are gun owners, 1,568,893 people are gunowners. Of these, 20%
admit to carrying a gun in their car, which puts the number at 313,779
gunowners in Southern California who keep a gun in their car.
Extrapolating this data to include the entire population of California
we get 33,871,648 people (SOURCE:
http://www.50states.com/californ.htm) , of which 24% would be
gunowners (8,129,196) of which 20% admit to carrying a gun in their
car (1,625,839).
Another poll I found had different numbers, whereas the above suggests
that about 4.8% of Californians carry a gun in their car, a Los
Angeles Times poll said that 5% carry a gun in their car and 2.9% was
found in the sample by Raymond W. Novaco of the University of
California at Irvine.

From Surviving in a Hostile Culture (February 8, 2004) Jim Meyer makes
the reference that ?He also told us that 35% of all California drivers
carry a gun in their car, and that you don't want to needlessly
provoke anyone who carries a firearm.? This would put the total number
at 2,287,969 people who carry a gun in their car in California.
