I do believe what causes people to smoke are deeply-held, unexplored,
belief constellations . . . otherwise known as ''unresolved emotional
issues"

how is this relevant to the wider community?

the healthier the individuals in the community, the healthier the community.

Whatever causes them to smoke, these days it makes members of the
wider community feel superior and healthier  - not that they are,
especially those who are continuously feeding their faces. 
(Continuous means "without interruption".)
