Question ID: 75759
What proof exits that Vera Mildred Ferguson and Leonard Cuthbert
Ferguson were married? They both lived in New York State prior to
moving to Illinois in the twenties. She seems to have been born in
Steuben county around 1896 and later moving to Remsen, Oneida Ct. NY.
She was RN that may have run a hospital during WW1. Her mother may
have been Jones. He was born in Hammond NY in 1888 to Mary and Rev.
Daniel A. Ferguson. Thier first son, Roger Oaks Ferguson, was born in
1925. Other children are Nancy and Daniel.

Leonard was born 1898, Hammond, Ny. and his father was the Reverand
Daniel Archibald Ferguson that may have died in 1931. His mother was
Mary Cuthbert.

Vera Mildred Ferguson may have worked in a family grocery store as a child.
Had sister that became Ruth Warren married to Carl and Brother James.

The maiden name is Vera Mildred Ferguson, I believe. He attended
Hammilton College which is close to Remsen NY. That seems a likely
place for them to meet. She went to college also as she was a
registerred nurse and ran a hospital with 250 people during WW1. I
don't think they were married and her family is obscure as is his.
Suspect his father (Reverand Daniel Archibald Ferguson) had previous
wife and really unsure whether he married Mary Cuthbert the mother of
Leonard in Hammond NY.

Was Vera's maiden name also Ferguson? Or is her maiden name as-yet
unknown?

I found a census listing in an index for Leonard C. Ferguson in the
1920 census. He was age 21, the right age to be your Leonard, and he
was born in New York. He can be found in Morris, Morris County, New
Jersey, Page 11A, Enumeration District 30. I don't have access to the
actual census, but a look-up there could provide some clues. If
Leonard and Vera are listed as man and wife, it's possible they were
married in New Jersey rather than New York or Illinois.

Other ideas on how to obtain proof of their marriage:

Another thought is to try to find the probate record for Leonard's
father. If he died in 1931, and there is any kind of will or probate,
it will likely mention Leonard and his wife, which would be a
confirmation of their marriage.

A copy of Roger or the other childrens' birth certificates may
indicate whether their parents were married or not.

Finally there is the "scatter-shot" approach. Write or call the state
agencies that hold marriage licenses in all possible places of
marriage and request a search of their records.

A search of Illinois records is $15.

If, after a Census look-up, Leonard and/or Vera were in New Jersey in
1920, here is that address. The cost is $4.00.

I would recommend calling first. Occasionally you get lucky and
they'll look it up for you right there and then. The second reason is
that prices and addresses can change.

I hope this information is helpful to you, and that you find your
connection!
