Why do fat girls wear stripes?

As a fat guy, I can tell you the theory is because stripes are
supposed to be slimming, it's not always true, and it really only
partially works for vertical stripes. Vertical stripes fool the eye
into thinking the object is taller and narrower then it actually is.

I used to be a fat girl. I was well aware that nothing I wore would
make me look thin, so I chose clothes that I found to be attractive.
If a striped pattern was pleasing to my eye, I'd wear it. If not, I
wouldn't.

I used to be fat girl also and I don't remember wearing stripes, only
elastic waists.

I wonder if horizontal stripes would make me look less skinny now?
