Question ID: 757843
I installed microsoft smtp service on my windows 2003 server so my web
site can use smtp to send out emails from my web site. My windows 2003
server is not in a domain, it is a standalone server. My web site is
in the same server as the SMTP server. I wanted to send out emails
only.

I have configured "access" and "relay" properties of the SMTP service
to allow anonymous access from the local IP address. However, every
time when I sent out an email, I got an error message "relay access
denied". BTW, I am using Java mail client. The Java mail client works
for other SMTP servers.

Anything I missed?

thanks,
Qiang

It sounds to me like you need to create some sort of domain for the
SMTP service to use. Right now I would guess that your windows 2003
server is part of a work group?

have you tried sending out an email using the workgroup name as your domain?

My main knowledge is in exchange (as I get this type of thing a lot)
and it is usually due to a user having a MAIL FROM address as
user@domain2.com and the server only accepting mail for *@domain1.com.

If you play with your relay permissions you are most likely to make
yourself into an internet open relay and ruin all your chances of
sending mail due to being blacklisted by the RBS that run on the net.

Yes, my windows 2003 server is not in a domain. It is the only server
in the workgroup. If I use the computer name or the workgroup name as
the email address domain (I.e. username@computer-name), I would get an
error message like "invalid address".

I had similar working experience for Unix SMTP. Unix SMTP service can
be setup so that you can send out messages to an email other than your
unix domain. Anyway this is the function "relay", right? Microsoft
never mentioned anything about a domain setup in its SMTP service help
document, so I guess this can be done in a workgroup environment.

Since I only allowed clients from the local server to access the SMTP
service, so I do not worry about that somebody else will use this
server as a spam weapon.

Let me know if you need more information,
thanks,
Qiang
