Dear briscut-ga;

Thank you for allowing me to answer your interesting question. The
word Kaddish means ?holy? in Aramaic. It was adopted into the Jewish
lexicon as Kiddush, meaning sanctification. The Jewish liturgy?s
holy-trinity is ?kadosh, kadosh, kadosh?, a morning prayer, which is
taken from Isaiah, chapter 6, verse 1 (?Holy, holy, holy is the Lord
of Hosts.?)

As you can see the word means a variety of things depending on the
context in which it is used. Most commonly perhaps Kiddush is the
blessing of wine in a prayer for evening Shabbat, a prayer over wine
sanctifying the Sabbath. Therefore the word in itself is taken to mean
?prayer?. Here are the words (both English and Hebrew) for Kiddush:

There are, however, other Kaddish, such as the Reader Kaddish

In short, the word commonly conveys the equivalent of ?prayer?.

I hope you find that my answer exceeds your expectations. If you have
any questions about my research please post a clarification request
prior to rating the answer. Otherwise I welcome your rating and your
final comments and I look forward to working with you again in the
near future. Thank you for bringing your question to us.

Vey ist mir, Tutuzdad! What about the Mourner's Kaddish? This is very
likely to be what a gentile would hear referred to in addition to your
mention of the Sabbath Kiddush.

The Mourner's Kaddish starts exactly as the Reader's Kaddish and adds
a couple of lines.

As I said in my answer, "There are, however, other Kaddish..."
