My friend recently got into a car accident and it has made me want to
get a safer car.

I'd like to know what cars have received an NHTSA 5-star rating for
both front and side impact tests.  Not all cars have been rated by the
NHTSA, so equivalent top-score ratings from European agencies (such as
euroncap.com) are OK too.

I'm interested in cars manufactured between 1996 and 2003.  For each
car, I'd like the year, make, model, and URL to supporting evidence.

From the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's website, I
have listed all the cars that received complete (both front and side)
5 star ratings from them between 1996 and 2003. Unfortunately, there
aren't many of them, and in fact, all of them are either SUVs, vans or
trucks. There are many more "regular" European cars given better
ratings.

There are two ratings for each impact situation, driver and passenger
for front impact and front and rear for side impact. In cases where
three of the four were five stars and the fourth was four stars, I
have included these and listed which stars were earned for which
event, to provide more choices of cars from which you can choose.

Note: side impact tests are not available prior to 1999, so I've
included only the years 1999 to 2003. If you would like, I could
provide you with a list of vehicles which rate five stars on the front
impact tests for those years. Also, as you can see, for the years
listed below many of the same vehicles pop up over and over. So those
makes would probably be safe bets for years prior to 1999, also.
(Although sometimes the safety ratings can change drastically from one
year to the next, so that is definitely not a guarantee.)

The only cars that scored five on everything are the

and the 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003 Ford Windstar with side airbags.

front and side impact ratings are together under an "adult protection"
score. The scores are first given on a 1-100 scale, and many of the

This was a great answer to my specific question and the researcher
astutely broadened the categories due to the disappointing number of
results.

Even though I didn't ask for it (because I didn't know about it at the
time I phrased my question), I would have been even more impressed if
the researcher also included IIHS data in the results.

Also, a spreadsheet would be a good form to present this information
in.  If the researcher constructed a Google Spreadsheet with the
results then this information would be easier to interpret.
