I am looking for a book that must be about 50 years old but that I was
read when I was a child, 25 years ago! It is about a little boy who
could not read so got lost on the way home as he could not read the
road signs. It led to various other disasters. The boys name was
Robert Francis Wetherby. Can anyone help me.

No result, but a remark: The book is probably even older than 50
years. A pantomime of that name, most likely based upon the book, is
mentioned in the 1946 Yearbook of the Association for Supervision and
Curriculum Development.

toad1-ga,

Your memory was right on target, but it turns out there are quite a
number of ways to spell "Weatherbee":

http://www.alibris.com/search/search.cfm?qwork=5781778&wauth=Leaf%2C%20Munro&matches=11&qsort=r&cm_re=works*listing*title
Robert Francis Weatherbee
by Munro Leaf

...Relates the story of one hopless little boy who refuse to learn to
read, write, or count, until the practical effects of ignorance catch
up with him.

You should be able to get yourself a copy at alibris, another
bookseller, or even your local library.

All the best,
