Question ID: 759654
I am trying to determine the name of an old documentary/kids
educational series. It was a short sort of educational adventure that
took place somewhere in mexico. Some kids lived/worked on a boat with
parent(s) and throughout the "series" the figure out that some people
are looting ancient aztec/mayan artifacts by using some ancient
mayan/aztec way of navigating a coral reef that usually blocks access
to the port (they do this at night). At the end of every "episode"
they have some short educational bit relating to the plot in the
current episode. I remember they had an episode involving lots of
diving and then went to a clip at the end about the bends. Another
time I THINK they had something about people who have lost a leg/limb.
Any help would be much appreciated! Thanks!

I believe that your series was "The Second Voyage of the Mimi" (1988).

" On its second voyage, the Mimi crew--which includes several
youngsters-- head for Mexico to study the ancient Maya civilization,
Trying to solve an archaeological mystery they find a lost Mayan city
and run into a gang of looters who are smuggling out artifacts They
visit with Mayan villagers and scientists and are helped by local
people. They visit the Montverdi cloud forest in Costa Rica and learn
about its ecosystem. A Mayan scientist shows them ancient solar and
star timekeeping features of the old buildings."

"... The Second Voyage of the Mimi. It consists of an informative
series of episodes and expeditions on video tape and books. The
episodes tell a story about a group of people studying the ancient
ruins of the Maya. As the story unfolds, they find out there are
looters taking artifacts from the ruins and selling them for thousands
of dollars. Eventually they are caught and justice prevails. The Mimi
is the ship they use to travel around the Yucatan Peninsula."

The video series is available for purchase at

In an interesting bit of trivia, the cast included a young Ben
Affleck. See Internet Movie Database:

search strategy:
"children's television" "mayan ruins
"second voyage of the mimi" mayan looters

I hope this helps.
