Most likely, you don't have Thunderbird set up as your default e-mail
client. You can do this by going into the General tab in the
Preferences window in Thunderbird.

However, if there are e-mails already stored in Outlook and they show
up in the search results, they're going to be opened by Outlook
(unless you import them into Thunderbird - which would be
recommended).

From your question, I gather you didn't update your Google Desktop
program recently, right ?
Mine is a few weeks old (Google Desktop 4.2006.0627.0443-en-pb), and
by default (and there are no settings to change it), search results
coming from the mail, will be opened IN THE BROWSER !
So, just a tip, don't upgrade your program.
