A list of company names (with some indication of what they
design/manufacture) would be great.  I'm doing a green design project
in the UK aimed at trying to improve the design of EEE to reduce its
environmental impacts, make it easier to recycle and so on.  I need to
find a suitable class of product on which to base the project (e.g.
kettles, printers...).  To target the project effectively, I need to
know how much of what categories of EEE are produced in the UK (this I
have found from ICER) and what products within these categories of EEE
are designed and/or manufactured in the UK, with some indication of
how each product is represented.

The categories are listed in Annexes IA and IB of the WEEE Directive,
which can be found at

This is a directory of several hundred UK EEE manufacturers, sorted by
the type of products they offer.

Have a look at it, click on the links on the page, and you'll see that
there's a wealth of listings and information here.

Thanks.  It's a good list but it only represents subscribers to
Electronics Weekly's Buyers Guide, not UK industry as a whole.  Is
there any evidence to suggest that every designer and/or manufacturer
in the UK uses this service?

Hello Dunacn....thanks for getting back to me.

The directory at EW looks to me to be quite comprehensive...it even
has probonopublico's daughter's company on the list!  (See the
comments, below, if you've missed that particular dialogue).

I didn't see a detailed description of the directory though, in terms
of who is (or isn't) listed, and I wonder what leads you to believe
it's only a listing of EW subscribers?  If that's the case, they have
a pretty long subscribers list.

For instance, the directory lists 1,259 companies just beginning with
the letter "B":

That may not be every "B" electronics company in the UK, but it
certainly must be a fair chunk of them.

Does that provide suitable coverage for your needs, or is there
something else I can do for you to provide more complete information?
