Question ID: 760782
I wish to create a database of the school uniform policy (i.e. what
the pupil is required to wear, and any policy on where it must be
purchased) for every
school in the UK.

Assume that I won't be ringing every school myself and I am looking for
cost effective options on the best way of achieving this.

I am fairly IT literate, so I can create a database and interface
(including online website if needed) which would allow the schools
themselves, or, any companies / people that I engage, to enter the
information which I can then collate.

I haven't found the exact number of schools in the UK, but I am
assuming it is excess of 10,000.

I guess there are two parts to this question:

1. Where can I obtain a list of all primary and secondary schools
(private and public) with contact details (e.g. phone or email
address)
2. Once I have this list, ideas on how best to solicit their school uniform policy?

I am prepared that this project could take several months for me to
complete, so I am looking for a controlled and efficient way of
managing this.

<School uniform policies.

Number of primary and secondary schools.
There are around 26,000 primary schools and 5,000 secondary schools in the UK.

----------------------------------------
1. List of schools.

There are a number of places where you can find lists of schools.

Schoolswebdirectory.co.uk has a directory of 32,000 UK schools and
colleges. The database includes primary, secondary and independent
schools. The site allows you to search by county. Searching on a
county will give a list of schools in that county. The type of school
primary, secondary and whether or not independent is indicated. Where
the school has a website a link is provided to it from this page.
Clicking on info takes you to a page where the school address, phone
number and website (if one available) is shown.

---------------------------------------
Schools Interchange provides links to school websites in the UK.
http://www.happychild.org.uk/schools/uk/index.htm

For example clicking on Bedfordshire schools takes you to a list of
school?s websites for the county.
http://www.schools.bedfordshire.gov.uk/schools/ssites.htm

Clicking on Cheshire Schools takes you to a page that gives school websites.
http://www.salt.cheshire.gov.uk/schools/schools.asp

-------------------------------------
Preparatory schools and links to their website can be found on the IAPS site.
http://www.iaps.org.uk/school/default.asp

---------------------------------
Local authorities have contact details for schools in their area. From
the Department for Education site there are links to all the local
authorities. At the local authority site, clicking on education often
takes you to a list of schools with contact details.
http://www.dfes.gov.uk/localauthorities/index.cfm?action=authority

For example the London Borough of Barking & Dagenham site gives
contact details for its schools. This page for Cambell Junior School
shows the name of the headteacher, address, telephone, Fax and email
address.

----------------------------------------
----------------------------------------
2. Soliciting the uniform policy.
It should be possible to get information from most of the schools via
the internet as most UK schools are online.

By 2000, 98% of secondary schools were online.

By 2001, 96% of primary schools in the UK were online.

Via the school website.

Some schools give the dress code on their website. For example this is
for Ambergate Primary School.

This page for Brentwood County High School gives details of the dress
code and the supplier.

Summer Fields School provides a link to online ordering information at
the School Wear Oxford site.
http://www.summerfields.oxon.sch.uk/admissions/school-uniforms.php

At this site uniform details are listed for 24 schools.

-----------------------------
Via email.
Most schools can be contacted by email. Some schools have contact
pages where you can ask for information.

Only a small percentage will need to be faxed, phoned or contacted in writing.

-----------------------------
Via internet search.

Performing searches like the following brings you directly to many of
the dress codes.>

<Hope this helps.>
