Hello tinkerbell

A lot of the research into UK residential child care is published in
journals or books not available online. Would you be interested in
brief descriptions and references to articles and books which you
could find in a library stocking social work journals? If you think
this might be useful, could you also let us know what you mean by
recent?
And are you interested in reports of conferences or projects which are
not strictly academic research? For example:

What I mean by recent is in the last year. The address you gave me
very good, found some things I was looking for. Thanks. Any other
links or info. I would appreciate

Hello again tinkerbell

Since the SIRCC was set up at Strathclyde University, it has acted as
a central source of information on residential child care in Britain
(not just Scotland). As you've found, the National Children's Bureau
is a good place to find out about projects with children in care. The
Guardian is a useful place to look for up-to-date information, because
of its coverage of social work issues. When searching, remember that
the phrase 'looked-after children' is now used quite a lot (it's
fashionable!) to cover children in both residential and foster care.

SIRCC (SCOTTISH INSTITUTE FOR RESIDENTIAL CARE)

The Scottish Institute for Residential Child Care has a very extensive
listing of articles on children in care and related subjects. Some of
them are described in enough detail to be useful without a trip to the
library, but you will need to have Adobe Acrobat Reader installed on
your computer to read them. SIRCC offer you the chance to download
this on their home page.

You'll need this page to get their most recent "Information Centre
Bulletin" (June/July):
http://www.sircc.strath.ac.uk/library/infocent.htm

You can also search their library catalogue - but fewer details here,
of course:

NATIONAL CHILDREN'S BUREAU

I'm glad you found the National Children's Bureau link helpful.
You can use Google to search their site for every mention of the word
'residential':

You can change the results by putting different words and phrases
inside the quotation marks to pull out what you want from them.

You may be interested in some of their press releases which you can
search through here:

THE GUARDIAN

The Guardian archives are another good place to look, for instance,
these stories:

'Looked-after children prefer residential care over fostering, says
report', by David Mitchell (Monday May 14, 2001 )
http://society.guardian.co.uk/socialcare/news/0,8372,490828,00.html

'Move to keep troubled children within the family', by Patrick Weir
(Wednesday August 22, 2001)
http://society.guardian.co.uk/societyguardian/story/0,7843,540200,00.html

You can search their archives with different words and phrases.

You could also try the BBC archives, e.g.

Can children in care avoid prison?

I hope this is helpful. Please ask if you need any clarification.
