I'm a successful part time entrepreneur in California, but I maintain my day job because of the group health insurance they offer. I'd like to cut the apron string and go out completely on my own, but the insurance situation holds these plans hostage. I don't want to buy private health insurance, I would like to structure my one man business so that I can easily purchase group health insurance for myself and family. I'd like to purchase group insurance as opposed to private insurance so that I don't have to deal with preexisting conditions and riders, etc. Since I'm still a sole proprietor, I have plenty of leeway in regards to business structure, and I'm willing to change whatever is necessary to get the best deal possible. Question: How can I purchase group health insurance for myself and family and pay for it as an expense of my business? |

You may be able to get a group plan (which may be paid by the employer if you institute a company policy that way.) Most group plans however require that you have at least 2 people on payroll. And unfortunately each employee will have its own copays/deductibles. So for example, you would be one employee. Your wife would be another and she would add the child/children onto her plan. But the reality is that in California, based on my experience, health insurance is extremely pricey. I have my wife on as an employee as stated above, but she IS a legitimate employee of the company. Just know that whatever you offer to one employee you must offer to another. So if you ever hire another employee, the company must pay for their health insurance too. You may check with Pacificare and Blue Shield. I know for certain these two providers offer group policies for businesses with 2+ employees. The advantage with a group plan too is that if you have any illnesses that may inhibit your ability to get health insurance privately, they won't deny you under the group plan. Hope that helps. Disclaimer: this is just my opinion based on my dealings in this area. Check with your local authorities, IRS, etc etc. ;) |

1) Your wife needs to be on the ownership/partner documents on your corporation 2) The corporation needs to have a local business license, Fed Tax ID 3) Payroll helps 4) Depending on the pre-existing conditions, it may be more beneficial for you to go with private insurance (for the self employed).
