Hi, I would like to find a table of English pronunciation of Greek
letters, which are used in mathematics using the international
phonetic alphabet (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Phonetic_Alphabet).
I found two:

http://www.thesauruslex.com/Grekalfa.PDF
http://wwwexe.inf.ufsc.br/~arthur/material_didatico/AlfabetoGrego.pdf

and also:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/English_pronunciation_of_Greek_letters

I would like to have some table made by someone erudite, so that I
know the pronunciation is correct and also to list all the possible
pronunciations of one letter (for example there are several different
pronunciations of "xi").

Hi livioflores,
thanks for the link. It contains the Greek pronunciation, but I am
interested in English pronunciation. Example: pi is pronounced "pi" in
Greek but "pai" in English. If you look at the links in my question,
they contain the English way of pronouncing Greek letters. I would
like to find some page similar to your link, but containing English
way of pronunciation.

Thanks,
Ondrej

Hi!!

I think that I found what you need. The following page has, together
to a valuable additional info, the name of the greek letters in greek
and english with their IPA pronunciation and, when there are
differences, the US pronunciation (see for example the letter BETA):
"KATERINA SARRI WEBTOPOS - GREEK ALPHABET: CHART 1":
http://users.otenet.gr/~bm-celusy/chart1.html

Note that you can also open a FULL DISCUSSION PAGE for each letter,
for example open the alpha's page and the navigate the alphabet using
the "Next Letter" and "Previous Letter" links:
"KATERINA SARRI WEBTOPOS - ALPHA in GREEK ALPHABET":
http://users.otenet.gr/~bm-celusy/alpha.html

"KATERINA SARRI WEBTOPOS - BETA in GREEK ALPHABET":
http://users.otenet.gr/~bm-celusy/beta.html

etc.

The sound files are for greek pronunciation (sorry), but this is the
mos complete page I found related to this. I hope this really helps
you, if it does please let me know in the clarification box and I will
make this the official answer by reposting it at the Answer's box.

Hi!!

Thank you for giving me the opportunity to answer your question. I
will repost my last comment here to make it the official answer.

Note that you can also open a FULL DISCUSSION PAGE for each letter,
for example open the alpha's page and the navigate the alphabet using
the "Next Letter" and "Previous Letter" links:

http://users.otenet.gr/~bm-celusy/alpha.html

"KATERINA SARRI WEBTOPOS - BETA in GREEK ALPHABET":
http://users.otenet.gr/~bm-celusy/beta.html

etc.

Search strategy:
When I saw your last comment I refine my search keywords focusing them
in exactly what you request on such comment: "greek letters" +
"english pronunciation" + IPA . By doing that the KATERINA's pages
appears at the top 3, but it is the first one related to your question
(now is the fourth one, the first one is this question!!), the other
two are about the IPA.

I am so glad to know that you have got an useful answer.

Best regards,

Hi
i think this link has the info that u r looking for

http://www.ibiblio.org/koine/greek/lessons/alphabet.html

you will find the english pronunciation of greek alphabets in there.

also the XI specifically, Xi (c): This is the same sound as "ch" in
"Bach", which does not sound like "ch" in "chair". The same sound
occurs in the Scottish "Loch", as in "Loch Lomond", or the German
"ach!".

hope this is useful

Perhaps these two sites are a help:
http://www.valdosta.edu/~cbarnbau/personal/teaching_MISC/greek.htm
http://everything2.com/index.pl?node_id=24559&lastnode_id=0
http://abstractmath.org/MM/MMGreekAlphabet.htm

Ondrej,
If you are satisfied with the above links, either Tom's or mine, it
would be very nice if you asked Livioflores to post them as an answer.
I am sure that the Researcher would have responded to your request
for clarification and would have found more appropriate sites such as
these to help you. Since the email notification system is not
working, Livioflores did not receive immediately any indication that
you had asked for a clarification.
If Tom or I have supplied your answer, it should be worth the price to
you, and only Livioflores can collect it.

I hope you agree.

Hi, Myoarin,

your last link (http://abstractmath.org/MM/MMGreekAlphabet.htm) is
actually what I am looking for, but I would prefer the pronunciation
to be in the international phonetic alphabet
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Phonetic_Alphabet),
because the american way of writing the pronunciation is completely
unreadable for me (I need to look up what the letters with funny
accents mean, the IPA is much easier to understand). Look at the links
in my question - they contain the the result I want, but it's done by
some non native speakers.

ok, it seems there is no such a thing on the web, or $5 is too low
price, so I'll take your last link and convert the pronunciation to
IPA myself.

BTW, how can I ask him to post an answer? I don't know his email, and
if the email notification is not working, there's no way how I can
reach him.

But I would appreciate if he could do one last try to find
english/american way of pronciation using IPA. Or say that he didn't
find anything.
Thanks,
Ondrej
