I believe this is a Slavic surname. I've known two people named Yanko. One was of Polish ancestry, and the other was Bulgarian. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Slavic_surnames |

It is also a given name: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_(name) and can also be a Jewish surname (but doesn't have to be): http://www.missing-identity.net/mi/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=46&Itemid=26 The spelling with Y is no doubt a variation to preserve the Slavic pronunciation of Janko. |
