Several years ago, I seem to remember reading that Andrew Jackson's
mother wrote him a letter when he became president about the value of
friendship, and reminded him that good friend had a right to expect
both favors and consistent behavior as a result of their support. I'm
curious about that letter. |

I truly hate to disappoint you, but it can't be Andrew Jackson you're
recalling. Your request indicates the letter being written when
Jackson became President. Andrew Jackson's mother, Elizabeth Jackson
took ill and died in November of 1781. Jackson did not become the
seventh President of the United States until March of 1829. As you can
see, when Jackson became President his mother had been dead for not
quite 48 years. It would have to be a very curious letter indeed.
Who besides Jackson could you be recalling?

Thanks for your prompt response. You're right: receiving a letter
from the grave would have been disturbing, even in those times. (ha).
Perhaps I'm mistaken about the reference, but I could swear it was
Jackson. It could have been when he rose to another office, but I'm
not sure. The crux of the letter was that good friends had a right to
have an expectation of certain traits: loyalty, honesty, etc. and
that he should not forget that in his political career. It was a
statement that had broader implications.
Sorry I can't be any more specific. The reason I'm interested is that
I read a book review in 1997 or 98 and I thought it was about
Jackson's life. Perhaps I was wrong about the politician.
Sorry to bother you with this....I guess I should clip these things in
the future. Grab the $7 bucks....but if you come across something in
the future, please keep me in mind.

Do you recall the name of the source publishing the review you read then?

Since I don't read books (but lots of papers), it had to be a
newspaper. I was living in Athens, Ga, at the time, so I'd guess the
Atlanta Journal or the Athens paper (and I can't recall that name).
Thanks again.
Steve
Btw, I'll be traveling this week (Johnson City) by car...leaving in a
few mins, in fact. I'm still very interested in this, but can't check
email as much and didn't want you to send me an email and not get a
prompt response.
