Question ID: 761940
My daughter is a high school senior searching for a college. Is there
a good online (or even offline) 'underground' guide to colleges, so
she can get a feel for the college, aside from the normal propoganda -
website, college guides? i.e. community, class size, teachers,
partying, etc.

Hello, gregsisi-ga!

There are several good websites and books which provide the "inside
scoop" on individual colleges. My daughters used many of these
resources and I have to admit, I still love to look through them from
time to time!

The college reviews are written by students and provide some good
insight into the real scene behind the "official website." You can
search for schools by type, size, student body, state and name.

Each student who submits a review provides their ranking on several
criteria and can also choose to submit a personal review of the
school. The reviews are most helpful. Make sure to click on the tab
"Comments" at the top of the school page to read the reviews.

 How does the site work?

Sample Review - Harvard University

85 students have rated HU
(71 undergrads + 14 grad students)

Education Quality B (6.7)
Social Life C+ (5.7)
Extracurricular Activities B (6.7)
University Resource Use B (6.8)
Perceived Campus Safety B (6.7)
Surrounding City B (7.1)
Campus Aesthetics B (7.3)
Campus Maintenance B (7.1)

 Student comments about Harvard

"There are 699 items in the College Reviews section. Looking forward
to college visits? Check out reviews of colleges - public and private,
from the Big 10 to the Ivy League, from small liberal arts schools to
large state universities, including 2-year and 4-year programs -
written by prospective students like you. Be sure to submit your own,
and good luck on your college search and on the application process!"

While the "meat" of the reviews are in the individual books which can
be purchased for each college profiled, your daughter can get some
idea of how colleges rank in various aspects of campus life:

Campus Dining
Campus Housing
Campus Strictness
Drug Scene
Greek Life
Local Atmosphere
Off-Campus Dining
Off-Campus Housing
Safety and Security

About the Guides

If your daughter narrows down some colleges, tell her to look on eBay
for used College Prowler books! They are much cheaper that way!

"For more than thirty years, The Insider's Guide to the Colleges has
been the favorite resource of high school seniors across the country,
because it is the only comprehensive college reference written and
researched by students for students. In interviews with hundreds of
peers on campuses across the country, our writers have gotten the
inside scoop on every school - on topics from professors and campus
life to dorms and student activities. This thirty-third edition has
been completely revised and updated to stay on top of campus trends
and attitudes. Each school profile in the Insider's Guide cuts through
the veneer of brochures and common stereotypes to reveal the college
as it's seen through the eyes of its students."

* Again - you can probably find a used 2005 or 2006 edition on eBay or elsewhere.

"We've created 62 rankings lists across 8 categories, based on
feedback from more than 115,000 students across the nation. Enjoy!"
