I need a statistic that shows how many more items are on an average
supermarket shelf today vs over 10 years ago. It must be able to be
credited to a source as I am going to use in a PowerPoint
presentation.

ie: There are 45,000 items on an average supermarket shelf today vs
5,000 in 1996." (THIS IS A SAMPLE THAT I MADE UP)

duffy3646-ga,

I'll be researching your question for you, but it would be helpful to
have a bit of clarification. Do you really want statistics for a
typical supermarket *shelf*...???

Or did you mean to ask about the average number of items carried in a
typical supermarket (i.e., in the whole store).

If, in fact, you want shelf-specific stats, it would be helpful to
understand why, and just what you consider to be a "shelf", for your
purposes?

Thanks,

pafalafa-ga

Hello Duffy3646,

The average number of products carried by a typical supermarket has
more than tripled since 1980, from 15,000 to 50,000

Marion Nestle is Professor and Chair of the Department of Nutrition
and Food Studies at New York University. She was managing editor of
the 1988 Surgeon General's Report on Nutrition and Health. Nestle is
the author of Food Politics: How the Food Industry Influences
Nutrition and Health (University of California Press, 2002). She spoke
with NAH's Bonnie Liebman by telephone.

?Q: How do food companies entice us to buy junky foods?

A: First, they supply an enormous variety of packaged foods--an
estimated 320,000 at last count. The average number of products
carried by a typical supermarket has more than tripled since 1980,
from 15,000 to 50,000. In 1998 alone, manufacturers introduced more
than 11,000 new foods. More than two-thirds of them were condiments,
candy and snacks, baked goods, soft drinks, cheese products, and ice
cream novelties--much of it loaded with empty calories.?

?The Brand Names Education Foundation (BNEF) estimates that the
average supermarket carries 45,000 separate items, most of which are
