Question ID: 763373
I recently purchased a 52" RCA HDTV (Model # R52WM24) and was told I
could receive HDTV broadcasts over the air with this unit. My current
set up includeds a Scientific Atlanta Explorer 8300HD Set Top Box/DVR.
The problem is the building that I live in is contracted with Time
Warner Columbus, who does not carry ABC and FOX HD. It turns out that
the TV does not have a RF input to plug an antenna in. How may I
still view HDTV over the air with this TV? Can I receive HDTV
broadcasts over the air through the antenna input on a VCR hooked up
to the television?

To view HDTV over the air, you'll need an antenna and then an HDTV
"converter" (or "tuner") box.

First, HDTV antennas are the same as "normal TV" (SDTV) UHF antennas,
so if you have one of those around already you're set. Unless you're
very close to the transmitters (to to antennaweb.org and it'll tell
you where the transmitters in your local area are -- cross your
fingers that ABC and FOX are included...), I'd suggest an outdoor
antenna. Visit Amazon.Com and searching for "HDTV antenna" will get
you pointed in the right direction. (I know, I know, I told you HDTV
antennas are no different than regular antennas and this is true, but
by searching for HDTV antennas as such you'll get better comments
specific to your intended usage.) Alternatively you might want to
visit your local Radio Shack or even a place like Fry's.

Secondly, you need a converter box. If you have a Wal*Mart nearby,
they've been closing out this unit:
http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.gsp?product_id=2598451 ... for
anywhere from $75-$150 depending on the store. Circuit City has a
couple as well, and there are many on eBay, but I wouldn't pursue that
option until you really know if this is all going to work out for you,
since of course there you have no return option.
