I am trying to find the title and author of a book I read when i was
in Jr. High school. I have no Idea what it was called but the plot is
well ingrained in my memory:

It is about a U.S. operative that goes to russia with the intent of
convincing these 2 Russian Pilots (1 male, 1 female who are lovers) [I
think they were MIG fighters] to defect to the U.S. The U.S. wants the
fighters, not the pilots because of some new 'black box' technology
that is in the airplanes.

The pilots both defect to an aircraft carrier in the mediteranean (I
originally thought the word 'mediteranean'and 'maneaver' was in the
title but that doesn't come up with any search results)that is
planning on being decomishond. (it's been stripped of all its weapons,
and has a skeleton crew) The russians find out and chase the aircraft
carrier while the agent on board is trying to get the boobie trapped
black box out of the fighters.

Misc info:

* 1 fighter blows up and they end up getting the black box from the other fighter.

* In russia, an elderly couple helped the agent find the russian
defectors and in turn he helps them escape russia on a submarine.

* Only 1 pilot was planned on defecting, but then his lover decided to
defect with him.

*The U.S. aircraft carrier was boarded by the russians sometime during
the book but they fought them off.

*At the end of the book, they got the black box, went over the side of
the aircraft carrier in another boat, rammed the aircraft carrier into
the russian ship that was after them and escaped.

So... as you can see I totally know the story but not what book!

Help me find the name of it and I would greatly appretiate it. -Thanks

I am confident that you are remembering a 1984 Dell paperback original
called "Mediterranean Maneuver," written by Stanley Monroe and Robert
Szilagye.

"Mediterranean Maneuver" is currently out of print, but used copies
are plentiful and inexpensive:

"Szilagye, Robert J. and Monroe, Stanley C.
Mediterranean Manuever, 1984 (The old carrier CORAL SEA is called
back into action to help carry out a daring raid to steal secret
electronic stuff from Rooskies.)"

The Nautical Fiction List

There is surprisingly little information about this book online, but I
recognized it from your detailed description. Couldn't remember how to
spell Szilagye until I looked it up, though! If you liked this one,
you might also want to try "The Trident Tragedy," by the same authors.

I hope this is exactly what you're looking for. If not, please request
clarification; I'll be glad to offer further assistance before you
rate my answer.

Have you read every book on the planet, Pinkfreud? Seems to me like you have!

BTW, I got my hands on the book "The Crucible of time" (a question of
mine that you answered), and I enjoyed it again as I had in High
School, even though it's not a literary masterpiece. Thanks once again
for helping me find it!

Dear Pink

Please say which ones you have not read ...

I'd like to bet that they'll be some of mine.

If so, I'll send a carrier pigeon over tomorrow.

All the Best

You might want to hold off on the carrier pigeon delivery. My cats
have been known to answer the doorbell, and I suspect that they would
subscribe to the practice of "killing the messenger."

None of my pigeons ever bothers about doorbells: they have all been
trained to drop their loads on any unsuspecting animals and then to
head homewards.

It's called 'strategic load dropping'.

You have been warned!

And don't you dare haul out that old shotgun, you are not Annie Oakley ...

I hope!
