Years ago, I remember running across an article or online discussion
about how Jerry Falwell had created a fake support group online for
married lesbians. He used this to gather intel about these women
before contacting their husbands. If my memory serves, some of them
killed themselves. My guess is that the group would've been a mailing
list or a Usenet group given how long ago I think it was.

Can anyone find any reference to the details?

Good luck in your search...I did try groups.google.com which are the
old Usenet files back to 1981..no luck (but maybe a better searcher
will).

However, I also checked Wiki/Snopes/Rotten and none mention anything
like this so I imagine it was someone's fantasy.

I am not at all fond of Falwell, but I don't believe the story for a
minute. If this were true, wouldn't there have been extensive media
coverage, as has been the case with other scandals concerning
Christian clergymen? Given the ferocity of Larry Flynt, a noted
non-admirer of Falwell and champion of sexual liberty, wouldn't Flynt
have been all over the story like a troop of hens on a June bug? Even
if this were not unbelievable for other reasons, the lack of mention
in the media makes it obvious to me that this is just a vicious and
unfounded rumor.
