Psychologist Julian Jaynes is alleged to have written this: "Why does
not the will stand master over action and rule with a sovereign hand?"

Dear gojohns22-ga,

I believe the quote should read as, "...so that whatever in us it is
that we refer to as will stands master and captain over action with as
sovereign a hand as the operator over a subject?"

The Origin of Consciousness in the Breakdown of the Bicameral Mind - Page 402
by Julian Jaynes

This appears on Google Books but only in a very limited extract. By
enlarging the search terms I have managed to find the full sentence.

?If under hypnosis we can be changed in identity and action, why not
in and by ourselves so that behavior flows from decision with as
absolute a connection, so that whatever in us it is that we refer to
as will stands master and captain over action with as sovereign a hand
as the operator over a subject??
