I need answers on 4 main issues about the Hasidic Jews, who live in Le Marais, a district in Paris. The questions are below. However, when answering them, please remember that the questions are neither about Le Marais nor Hasidic Jews. The focus is only on 'Hasidic Jews in Le Marais'. Question 1: Since when do Hasidic Jews live in Le Marais? Question 2: What percent of a majority do Hasidic Jews account to in Le Marais today? Was the figure pretty much the same in the history of Le Marais? Question 3: It is common knowledge that Hasidic Jews in Le Marais dress traditionally. However, do they consider sexual outfits, or to a larger extent, nudity, a sin? If so, does it make a difference to them if it is the Gentile who commit this sin? Do their religious teachings find the sight of nudity offensive? Question 4: What is the stance of the Jewish community in Le Marais on homosexuality? do they consider it a sin? If so, does it make a difference to them if it is the Gentile who commit it? Do they still care? This site says that Hasidic Jews started to immigrate to Western Europe in the 1880s. There were pogroms in Russia and the Ukraine at that time. http://www.answers.com/topic/hasid In your no. 2, do you want to know about the proportion of Hasidim among the total Jewish population in the Marais? Of course, it increased when they immigrated there. This related site explains that in 1796 Jews in France were given full rights, thus naturally making it attractive to immigrants: http://www.answers.com/topic/jew Hasidic Jews are very conservative in their dress and, as the first site mentions, very modest in this regards. They would disapprove of nudism, sticking with the tenets of the Pentateuch: remember Adam and Eve, Noah's nakedness being seen by his son, Moses' laws in Leviticus. Like conservatives of all types, they would object to more liberal activities by other persons, projected their own standards on them, considering them sinful. (Don't most of us, if we have strong beliefs?) Nudity and homosexuality are both prohited under Mosiac Law. Here is a review of a film about Jewish homosexuality: http://www.tremblingbeforeg-d.com/about/index.html This is, of course, not an "answer" to your question, just a free comment, but I hope it helps a bit. At least, it will put your question back on top of the pile. NOte: the email notification system is defunct, so you will have to check yourself to see if anything is posted to your question. |

Thank you. I know the Judaist view of homosexuality and nudity. However, as stated in the question, I need the answer specific to the Hasidic Jews in Le Marais. Maybe I should make it clear in the question as to how Hasidic Jews in Le Marais reconcile their beliefs with the very common nudity and homosexuality in the area. |
