db2006,
I can provide you with the following information for the U.S. cell
phone market for the third quarter 2005.
- Unit sales and market share by manufacturer
- The five top selling cell phones ( manufacturer and model)
Would this information work for you?
Thanks,
Bobbie7

Thanks for the fast reply, Bobbie7, but I am already familiar with
that report. The idea was to get down to the next level of detail.
Maybe it would help to further limit the question. If finding this
detail for the U.S. in general is too difficult because of market
size, would it help to limit the question to the most popular cell
phone models used by the youth segment, say ages 16 to 25 or 30?

Does this NY Times article help?
Cellphones: Most Popular

The NYT article is nice, but it doesn't reflect market share/unit
sales stats. Looks like the popularity is only defined by how many
users wrote a positive evaluation - similar to what you get in product
reviews on amazon.com.
let me add to my question the reason i am asking it. maybe that helps, too.
i have an idea for a softare application that is to run on cell
phones. the target market includees teenagers and other youngsters
that use cell phones for everything from chatting, to sms, to
downloading ring tones and playing games.
the software app is costly to develop and test on many different
platforms, and hence i want to limit my effort to building demos only
for the most popular phones on the market. as you know, these phones
are very expensive if buying without a calling plan.

Hi Bobbie7,
Just saw your notes. I guess getting the detail that I was looking for
is not as easy as I thought. I appreciate your lists, but I'd say we
are only half-way there. If you can find a similar listing of the most
popular phones for the youth market I will accept your answer and be
done with it. Aternatively, I'd like to wait a little longer for some
additional folks to get a chance to reply to my post.
Thanks,
Dee
