My girlfriend and I want to take a vacation to the Caribbean. We live
in New York City.

Can you tell me what our options are, including the pluses and minuses
of each location, based on the following:

BUDGET: About $2,000 (total for the both of us)
TRAVEl DATES: Jan 7th 2007 to Jan 13th 2007 (dates are flexable)
DEPARTING AIRPORT: Any New York City Airport
MUST be an all inclusive vacation
MUST be at least a 3 star hotel/resort
MUST be walking distance to the beach
IDEADLY the resort would be close to the arriving airport (less than an hour drive)
IDEALLY the resort would be a place that caters to couples, NO family
type places, NO college spring break or girls gone wild type places.

I am NOT simply asking for a list of places generated from
Travelocity/Orbitz/Priceline. What I'm looking for is for some deeper
insight into various places. You don't need to get as specific as to
an individual resort, (although that would be nice) but simply stating
facts about Jamaica would be too vague.

Thanks for your help.
Gabe

You can go to the west side of Puerto Rico for the amount you quoted
and still have cash left over. It isn't a resort, though you can find
pleasant places. Boqueron, Joyuda, and Combate all have little places
you can stay at. Rincon is fancier-- there's one esort there for $2000
per night-- and you might find something to your liking.

The west side is a 3 to 4 hour drive from San Juan. If you fly into
Aguadilla the drive is 20 minutes to an hour but the airfare and car
rental costs more.

Getting an all inclusive 3-star (very slippery, those stars-- a Motel
12/2 is classified as anywhere from one to three stars depending on
the rater) oceanfront vacation close to the highest part of the high
season is gonna be tricky.

I'll be there in February. My mother-in-law has a place on the west
side by the water. Tradeoff is I have to take care of her cows. I hate
cows. I went into small animal practice primarily because of cows
(well, horses, but cows were right up there). For the first three days
I smell like the south end of a cow that's facing north.
