How high do angels fly? At what speed? Do they ever get shot down (by mistake)? Can they land anywhere? Do they all speak English? Do they carry their harps everywhere? Are there any famous composers among the Angel Community? What happens to Angels when they die? I am sure that Easterangel can answer this from personal experience ... Or Answerfinder from his casebook ... Many thanks! Gaylord |

Bryan, Thank you for accepting my detailed and in-depth research. I regret that I have lost the bibliography. To answer your clarification question. They only use wings in the Earth?s atmosphere. Outside of the atmosphere their method of propulsion is unknown. Two distinguished scientists and Nobel prize winners, Professor Howard Effing of Effingham and Dr. Harry Weisblat, have proposed that they lose their human form and the harp may double as energy device used in transportation. Hope this answers your question. answerfinder-ga |

Thank you Answerfinder ... I was thinking of you today because there's a chap in Brighton who has an amazing collection of old Bobbies' Helmets, Caps & Uniforms and I wondered if you would like to contribute one of your old Plain Clothes outfits? I imagine that a Semi-Serious Fraud Squad kit (Burtons?) would nicely fill out his collection. All the Best Bryan |

Female Angles wore pretty much what the female Saxons did: a woolen shift and a cape held together by a taype of broach. |

That should have been "type", not "taype". They can, indeed, land anywhere, even a great - still unspecified - number of them on the head of pin. Maybe they can't all land at once, however. It is a misconception that angels all or only play harps. That may have once been the case, when the harp was the only transportable non-percussion musical instrument in Biblical times, but throughout Christian art - based on contemporary sightings at the time - they are shown playing violins, lutes, guitars, horns, small organs (similar to those the Hari Krishna folks had 40 years ago), I think I even remember a fresco with one clutching a viola da gamba or viola d'amore betweeen his or her knees.* Today - if sighted - I expect that they would play modern instruments, all acoustic, however, for two reasons: tapping in to power sources - even heaven sent ones like lightening - is too inconvenient; and - more important - they don't need amplification. If you can see them, you can hear them. Besides, they can expand their choir to meet any performance requirement: Luke 2:13 "And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God ..." This passage also suggests that they can fly very fast: "suddenly there was..." Which in turn suggests that its extremely unlike that one has ever been shot down. How high they can fly? Heaven knows? I expect "the sky's the limit," which in common usage means at least to the next galaxy. Angels don't die. Even when they are really bad boys, like Lucifer, they just get cast into hell (see Milton). Composers: No, none, all their performances are one-off appearances, extemporaneous, full of ad hoc improvisations - in the style of the time, of course: Boccharini, Monteverdi, Bach, and so on. These days, I expect that they are fabulous jazz artists. No, they don't rap. (I heard the question coming.) Back in the 1950s, they had their own record company, however. Hmmm, well at least there was one with their label. They speak whatever language you - not anyone named Gaylord - a listener can understand. Luckily, they only appear before small homogeneous groups of persons who all understand the same language. *"between his or her knees": Angels are really all males, perhaps many quite effete, if you understand, but the archangels are all quite manly: Michael, Gabriel (no harp, of course), et al. But you know how artists are, they like a little variety, and just automatically put a female figure in a long gown. This has confused people for ages. Anything else you want to know? Myo |

Do they ever get shot down (by mistake)? According to a trustable source, the UFO from the 1947 Roswell case was actually an angel shot down by the US military when they mistook him/her/it for a winged communist. The angel (whose actual name has 274 letters, but responds to the name of Donny) currently lives in Area 51, where he's known to order large quantities of pepperoni pizza, leaving outrageously low tips to the delivery boys. I hope this helps :) |

Great! My thanks to one and all ... But I suspect that Easterangel knows a whole lot more than he is prepared to impart. Angel Watchers will consider his reticence very unusual. Gaylord |

Bryan, Depends on whether it is angles or archangels. There is always a rivalry between the two, and with a suggestion of the occasional dirty trick. The height has not yet been confirmed. They are even out of reach of the Hubble telescope. During the Renaissance it was thought that it was 250 mph with a following wind. Why 250? Because they believed that man could not travel faster than riding on a galloping horse. Therefore an angel must be at least 250. Nowadays there is a different opinion: speed of light minus 1 foot per second. The opening of the grouse season is always a dangerous time. Despite the ability to fly at such speeds, on occasions an angel will get winged, but none have been shot down by mistake (as yet). They can land anywhere - expect one place - within 200 yards of Angel Falls in Venezuela. Although named after an America pilot, by coincidence the waterfall is dangerous to angels as the mist at the bottom of the falls is very disruptive to their flying. Yes, in fact, any language, apart from gibberish which causes a problem when trying to understand me. Yes, except when going to the bathroom. What with the wings, they have enough to cope with in a confined space. St. Michael is most famous and he is also conductor of the celestial choir. They never die. They just end up advising film directors and actors on how to portray an angel. See It's a Wonderful Life as an example. answerfinder-ga |

I read that the Borgias when their father was Pope, used to hold, what was called at the time, "Heavenly Gatherings" The idea being to emulate the Angelic Host.. The idea at time being that Angels were above all earthly things, Including the wearing of clothes. Those Borgias really knew how to party. Kemlo |

Answerfinder ... I knew that I could rely on you! Please post your comment as an answer but ... Kindly explain why angels can fly in rarefied atmospheres when aircraft and birds fail to perform. Please remember that this is a SCIENCE question and not a religious one. Many thanks! Bryan |

Dear Gaylord, Technical details: "In Bristol, Tennessee angels have been clocked at over 60 mph and probably hit 90-100 mph in glides and swoops. The angels have been observed over and the city and out at Watauga Lake. They fly as high up 1 to 1/2 miles high, but usually less, around 2-3,000 feet or so." (SOURCE: "How Fast Can Angels Fly?", The Evangelical Spectator, <http://evangelicalspectator.typepad.com/the_evangelical_spectator/2006/05/how_fast_can_an.html>). Naturally, the velocity also depends, if it is a European or an African angel; and if the angel is laden or unladen. Google says the language of the Angels is English: ://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&safe=active&q=language+of+the+angels&btnG=Search However, some dare to disagree with the holiest Goog of all: Divine language <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Divine_language> Enochian <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enochian> And the question is - should the black angel of PageRank-0 (a.k.a "ziri" to his closest friends, the lock on GA questions containing the holy word - a.k.a "lockey" - and Google Goo - http://www.google-store.com/product_info.php?products_id=61) visit upon those claiming otherwise than Google? In any case, I hope that the abovementioned angel, not to mention Kemlo's Angle, does not carry herpes everywhere, it is very contagious. As for harps, they are easier to carry around than pianos, and some probably use mouth-harps, if they are not inclined into carrying much baggage and are very annoying people (as the people who know how to play harmonicas usually are, I assume that the angels are worse). And speaking of music, a long forgotten hard-rock band has an answer to the question whether angels actually die: http://www.lyricsdownload.com/manic-eden-do-angels-die-lyrics.html |

"Kindly explain why angels can fly in rarefied atmospheres when aircraft and birds fail to perform." They eat a lot of legumes. In the rarified atmosphere, a little goes a long way. |

Bryan, Thank you for your kind tip. In my attic I have some old photographs from the days when I was just a trainee detective in the CID. Long-hair, sideburns, 70s clothes. They are always a great source of amusement for my two daughters. They say I look like a 70s porn star. Unfortunately for your friend?s collection, I had discarded that look by er.. 1993. By then Burtons was far too up market. It was C&A all the way for me. |

Answerfinder, Perhaps an indiscreet question, but how do your daughters (!) know what a "70s porn star" looked like? I mean - "Long-hair, sideburns, 70s clothes" - we all looked like that. Porn stars? Not in our wildest dreams. ;-) Myo |

Myo, Don't worry, I asked them that very question when they said it. Full interrogation with me taking both the roles of good cop, bad cop. They assured me that they had this information from the media reviews of the 70s and the film Boogie Nights. Anything to take the mickey out of their poor old Dad. |

I'M A BIT LATE ON THIS ONE. But if he checks back, a question for Myoarin. If bad angels are cast into 'hell', what is the situation after Revelation 20;14. (Revelation 20:14) And death and Ha?des were hurled into the lake of fire. This means the second death, the lake of fire. Which one is the 'hot' place? Can a place die?. Or is the 'place' eliminated? why is 'Hades'[hell] closely associated with death, also to be hurled into the ' lake of fire'. No! The teaching that 'hell' is a permanent place of torment/torture belies the scripture. Hell ios simply man's grave, what is always related to death. The 'Lake of Fire' is simply total elimination. Death and the grave will be elimated. (Revelation 21:4) And he will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away.? As to the question. Angels can travel instantaneously. There are a lot of them. [myriads of myriads] They are powerful. One killed 185,000 Syrian soldiers in one night. The depiction of angels with wings implies the ability to fly and travel. The angels who visited Lot in sodom, just before its destruction, did not have wings, but appeared as good looking men. The same with the two angels who visited Abraham. no wings. So they can change their appearance. Same with the single angel that was with Shadrach, Meshak and Abednigo when they were thrown into the furnace. |

Pugwash, you are so right. I can only hide behind the fact that I luckily referenced John Milton (his "Paradise Lost") as a source, but I read it ... - Oh Jiminy! - 45 years ago, and probably didn't understand it then. But we seem to agree on some other points: speed, male. I didn't say anything about their wings, because I knew that would open up the subject of the hierarchy of angels, saraphim and all that. But there could be an interesting question about the color of their wings: mostly they are shown as white, sometimes as multihued, but I can't remember one with black wings, or for that matter, an angel that didn't have blond hair. There is some bad racial bias on the subject. Okay, I just checked: one picture from Ethiopia of very black angels, and others of ones with black wing feathers, but the latter did not look like reliable sources. Cheers! Oh, and since I am here again: Thanks, Answerfinder. Very reassuring, though I have my doubts about even an experienced police interrogator's being a match for the practiced team of his daughters. |
