I am looking for LAMP-based CMS (content management system) that would allow me to quickly create small (1-10 pages) websites. The important point here is to be able to *fully* create and edit website's look and feel *visually* without knowledge of HTML or CSS. For example I want to be able to customize size of page, banner and header area, left and right border and footer, colors and fonts. I would like to be able to *visually* customize menu system - like it's colors, usage of background (or not) images for buttons. The problem with modern CMS is that they all based on templates and it is difficult to customize them without knowledge of HTML and CSS. I dont want to search for new template every time i want to move menu or decide to change colors and fonts on a website. There is a software package - XSitePro - that allows to create simple websites visually on the local PC without knowledge of HTML and CSS and then upload them to server. So i want exact functionality like this but with CMS. Joomla, Mambo, Drupal and some other CMS that I've tried would lock you in a current template and it is impossible to customize template without tweaking HTML and CSS. I want to know if there is CMS that gives you full visual design-type control over website's look and feel, as well as capability to add forums, blogs, shop and other standard blocks of functionality quickly and visually. I dont mind commercial CMS solution as well, but it should cost less than USD$200 flat fee for unlimited websites. I dont want to pay license for every little website that i will do. |

While a completely integrated solution, may seem best, you may want to consider an alternate approach to this issue. While Joomla, PostNuke, etc seem to "require" knowledge of HTML for their design, this is not totally the case. I am a Joomla developer, so I will explain how you could get by with a very small knowledge of HTML. There are many programs that allow for you to perform WYSIWYG (graphical) web development. A popular program, is Adobe (Macromedia) Contribute: http://www.adobe.com/products/contribute/. This software will allow you to download or buy any template and easily modify the graphics. You will then only need to copy the parts of the Joomla code that provide the content, such as mosBody. Joomla provides a lot of great free and quality pluggins, and has a very active open-community. In the long run, it may also even be better to simply invest $50 or so dollars to have a developer create your template, then to try to create it and to get it to work yourself. It dosn't appear that XSP is really capable of any amazingly fantastic layouts. If you would like an impressive layout you are usually going to want to higher and artist who does HTML and can make the template for you. For the price of XSP ($197) you could probably get a better value from paying individuals to create your specific Joomla or other open CMS templates and other site specifics. |
