For exmaple in the Word processing area, Word is the market leader, in
the spread sheet area excel is etc.....

You're still asking a very broad question, esp. for a $2 fee.  The
phrase "application category" invites interpretations varying from
"office, business, games" to "personal word processing, business word
processing, enterprise word processing, personal spreadsheet, business
spreadsheet, enterprise spreadsheet, personal page layout, business
page layout, enterprise page layout, etc."

This is obviously an exaggeration, and you *have* given some clue in
mentioning word processing and spreadsheet, but if you could give a
list of what categories you are interested in, we would have some idea
when we're "done" answering your question.

I'm not sure if you can find stats from some national report
indicating industry software leaders within their respective markets -
this would be the quickest route.  I am not looking for anything
specific like enterprise but in more general (public).  For example
within the word processing software market Word is the cear leader. 
So if there are stats or some report to support this - that's what I'm
looking for.  If you want a list here it is:

Word Processing
Spreadsheets
Databases
Web Development/Publishing
Photo
Operating System etc...

I hope form the stats that I will get a list of vendors with their
respective market share (not everyone just the leaders).  I don't
think I'm asking for too much - but if this takes any longer or should
cost more money than I will turn away from this service.
