I recently visited the US (I'm from the UK), where I got 2 parking violations in Vegas - 1 for being in a 3 minute loading zone, the other for facing the wrong way. Both were stupid, as I was parked outside of a courthouse supporting my friend who had to pay a fine in there. Anyway... I have these 2 parking tickets which are now overdue. I was in a rental car at the time. Should I pay the $40 fine and if I don't, can anything happen to me? |

I would first check the small print on your car-hire agreement. See this answer on a similar question. "On receipt of the ticket, the rental company will pay the fine and charge you an administration fee. It will then charge the credit card used at time of booking, in accordance with the terms and conditions of rental set out in the paperwork." http://travel.guardian.co.uk/askatraveller/story/0,,1561695,00.html |

"Should I pay the $40 fine?"... Of course you should have, you commited two offenses, you got caught and you got punished. Why would you not pay? Your justification in commiting these offenses is lame to say the least. As these fines are now overdue you can bet your bottom dollar on the fact that the rental company will have now paid them and you can brace yourself for the bill plus an outrageous handling charge. |

It is a fairly standard clause in a rental car agreement that if the car is issued a ticket while it is being rented by you, if you don't pay, the rental car company will. Then they will bill you for the cost of the ticket, the overdue penalties, and an administrative charge. I would try to minimize your losses and be proactive by contacting the court in Vegas to find out if the ticket was paid and if not, how much is currently due. This will eventually catch up with you if the rental car company has your credit card information. |

Declare your credit card mislaid or stolen. This will get you a new number and invalidate the number held by the car hire company Besides you're British, Why should you pay a fine imposed by a forign third world court. Kemlo British and proud of it |

"both were stupid".. I assume he meant that HE was being stupid for doing so, thus he accepts the responsibility for his actions. Pay the fine, you don't want to get arrested by the Homeland Security SWAT team when you next visit the States in 15 years, when brother Jeb is President-for-life. I hear he doesn't like Brits. :) |

Don't do it! If you pay your tickets I'll have to pay the one I got in Gibraltar! |

I have oft suspected that Kemlo is the alter ego of Probonopublico in a Jekyll and Hyde relationship. Certainly the evidence is there. I recall a Probono question that announced that he was expecting a visit from Kemlo and this surely translates as ?I am off my meds again?. In addition Kemlo asks if he should apologize to Probono, it all sounds very schizophrenic to me. Anyway Brian, you probably overdid the Gordons last night as you forgot that Kemlo can?t spell, and yet the tosh that Probonokemlo posted to Google is actually quite well crafted. As a Brit living in the US for 10 years I have no objection to you imperialistic warmongers visiting us for a vacation, all you have to do is stick to the rules and remember that when you are here you represent the British people and in some small degree Her Britannic Majesty. You can either act with honor and integrity and face up to the consequences of your actions or you can try to weasel out of them like a whinny little child. I would also avoid pretending to have lost your credit card, the merchant service companies are not that stupid and you are just going to end up with more and more service charges. For goodness sake it?s only $40, pay up and be done with it. By the way Probonokemlo, America is the New World, Africa is the Third World. I know it is an easy mistake as they both begin with A but please try harder. Of course the three of us realize that, under its present administration, it will not be long before the UK is the Third World where the only English that one will need is ?You show me which way welfare office? |

A few years ago I might have agreeed with you but now...... not so sure. I have to write many business letters and emails and my colonial cousins don't understand the extra u's. These days I find myself thinking that the colonials have got some things right. For example Brits say "Chews" day but the American pronounciation is Toos- day which seems more accurate. The bottom line is that, whilst retaining most of my Britishness I have assimilated into the local society. When in Rome ...... |

Whenever I receive correspondence from a colleague in a current or former Crown colony, I collect up the extraneous u's and ship them back when I've got a box of them. These used u's are still in excellent condition and there is no reason to get rid of them simply because they're used. Similarly, when dealing with French colleagues I sweep together every -eaux and slap on an "o" in its place. This saves room in my document storage systems and looks a bit more United Statesian in style. I have to be careful as as some of the -eaux's manage to escape and reattach themselves teaux a document I am working on despite various precautions and traps. |
