I have lost a screen capture program whose main feature was the
ability to create a box around a desired area of interest and to
capture just that area.  Don't know how I lost it from my Desktop but
need to find it again.

You could also check in your Control Panel > Add or remove programs.
See if the program is still there. If it is, it should show up when in
your program files. (Start > All Programs)

It is very easy :
1) go to START - FIND
2) make a search of all files, and put there the name of the aplication you lost 
3) when it apears click it with the left buton of your mouse and with
the rigth buton of your mouse create a shortcut

other way is to open START - PROGRAMS and find the name of the
aplication when it apears with the left buton o your mouse create the
shortcut

I've been using Gadwin for years and years.

I'm guessing the software is still installed on the computer. It just

Very Easy Method

1) You have a Screen You want to Capture
2) Press Print Screen Button (Top Right Side, After F Keys, On Keyboard)
3) Go To: Start Button, All Programs, Accessories, PAINT (Program Path)
4) In PAINT: Go to: Edit, Press Paste (Crop Picture)

Done - Simple

If you're talking about a program that captures screen movements, as
opposed to still pictures etc, there is a very good tool that I've
used in the past called http://www.debugmode.com/wink/download.php
which is FREE for download.

It allows you to do still images as well as videos, and also lets you
add stuff to the movie you're creating afterwards, like bubbles in
which you write explanations of whatever.

With this tool, you can select the area of screen you want to capture,
and press the capture button.

u said that u lost the program i.e installed program..do
onething...goto registry ( run>regedit>HKEY_CURRENT_USER>SOFTWARE OR
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE>SOFTWARE) FIND THE software here and download it
from the company site it will easier to find the particular
software..else u have so many screen capuring programs..

I'm at work and didn't really have the time to put too much time into
reading your question, but what I can say that may provide a bit of
help is Camtasia. For filming a select section of a screen Camtasia is
my personal favorite. You can record video and edit it beautifully,
but perhaps you're just looking to take regular screenshots.. I
generally dont mind cropping images so I usually just use the Print
Screen key on my keyboard and then edit it later, but I think you want
something a little more simple..
