Question ID: 767984
In my old computer i had Asus P4T533 motherboard and Toshiba DVD-ROM SD-M1712.
Because i had more than 4 IDEs, i installed additional IDE controller,
and connected dvd-rom to this controller, and amazing thing was that
it begun to read all formats, though it shouldn't (SD-M1712
specifications say (and so Nero InfoTool) that it should read only
DVD-R).
Now i have a new computer with Intel DG965WH motherboard, and a NEW
Toshiba DVD-ROM SD-M1912 - this dvd-rom according to its
specifications (and Nero InfoTool) it should read all formats
(including +R/+RW/-RW...). when i connected it to onboard IDE, it read
only DVD-R...when i connected it to the SAME controller from old
computer - it begun to read all formats.

It there anybody have any idea why this happen?

Also check for Firmware / Bios updates for your motherboard, these too
can make a difference.

A lot of CD/DVD drives capabilities are only limited by their firmware
and not by the hardware.

In some cases you can flash an inferior drive with firmware of a
superior model and it will work. Maybe the drive controller was having
this effect.

In response to fixing the problem make sure your computer BIOS and
windows updates are up to date.

More often then you think this would ba a result of a bad DVD disk. I
don't know how to explain the outcome of the first drive. However I am
curious how many disks you tested the second drive with before
attaching it to the IDE controller.

I remember I once bought a new DVD-/+WR drive with a pack of 50+R. I
must have tried 5 of the +R disks before trying a -R disk. All 5 of
the +R faild while the one -R worked. Naturally I went to return the
drive to the store. They put a +R disk in and it worked right away and
hasn't failed since. But the first 5 disks from that pack are garbage.
