I got the message "check failed" on my C: drive partition. Cannot
access the data on C: drive or bootup that drive. There is over 25
Gigs
of data on that drive.
I am using WinMe on a Dell Dim. XPS B733 This happened when I tried to
"merge" from another partition.

johnnysax-ga,

Can you bootup with the rescue disk and run Partinfo? Can you paste it
into here please? When you run PM 7 from bootdisks what error occurs?
"Check failed?" or any other error message possibly with an error
number?

I also suggest contacting Powerquest tech support at

http://www.powerquest.com/company/contactus.cfm

Best wishes,

mess. Mistajon-ga Thanks for asking! I am getting "checked failed" on
my 27 G partition. No OS. When I try to get info: mess:
"Error#3 Not enough memory" Not good stuff. The good news is I have
been using Un-eraser software, http://www.uneraser.com/products.htm
and seem to be getting some results. Restored a few files and created
an image file 4 files 1gig each in my C: partition, the one that still
works. Now my C: is out of space and I am going to try moving the
files to CD's. What fun! I have not been able to contact
partitionmagic tech by email yet.
I live in Panama and at this time do not have access to 800 toll free
numbers.
The last time I used partinfo I got a bunch of zeros.
Thanks again, John Dodge

PowerQuest's website (www.powerquest.com) has the following:

A "Check Failed" message occurs on partitions that are corrupt, have
boot sector problems, or have other similar issues. It is not uncommon
for the "Check Failed" message to be reported on partitions that have
just been restored from an image.

... run a CHKDSK or ScanDisk on the affected partition, correcting any
disk errors that are encountered.

If this does not fix the problem, reformat the affected partition ...

message denco-ga, Formating the petition would be easy but I want to
recover data if possible. How do I use chkdsk or scandisk
on a partition that I cannot access? Thanks for your help.

johnnysax - you might have to make boot disk that has
scandisk, etc. on it.

see: http://www.littlewhitedog.com/reviews_other_00017.asp

Once you boot with that disk, you can run scandisk:

scandisk c:\

and see if the system will recognize the disk on that level.

You can also try using a different hard drive that you can
boot from, then setting the 25G drive as the secondary, try
to then run scandisk on it, etc.

If that fails, there are various utilities that might be able
to help you recover the hard drive; for instance, see:

http://www.uneraser.com/products.htm

Also, you can see if you can boot off your WinME Cd by either
putting it in your CD drive then starting your computer, or
if you can set your BIOS (there will be a message on your
screen when you turn on the coputer that might say: hit Esc
to enter BIOS, etc.) boot device to your CD drive, then you
might be able to boot off your WinME Cd and then have it do
the scandisk (it should do it automatically) on the 25G.

The above are sort of advanced things to do, so if you know
someone that is an advanced computer user, you might want
to bring them in on the process.

denco-ga Thanks again for your help. I agree with you that I should
have some help. I am living in Panama and good help is not always
available.
I tried the bootup disk ""whitedog" it was fun but the disk did not
work. A lot of error messages "config.sys"Maybe I will try again.
I went to BIOS and looked at bootup. 1st is floppy 3rd is CD. How do I
change CD to 1st?

On the BIOS screen there should be some
instructions on how to change the value
of an enrty (the PageUp (PgUp) or +, etc.
keys are often used) and one of the options
might have the Cd first in boot sequence.

Mess Denco-ga
http://www.uneraser.com/products.htm Have you used this software? I
downloaded the demos and they seem to work.
I could see the 27 G partition with files. It says I need the
commercial software to restore. That is $49.00.
What do you think? The data is worth it if it works.

I have had no personal experience with Active
Uneraser, but, it got a good rating at:

http://www.filehungry.com/index.php?action=viewitemdetails&id=6242
http://www.sofotex.com/download/software/4319.html

You should check out Restorer2000 as well at:

http://www.bitmart.net/r2k.shtml

as they have a free demo download, the same price as
Uneraser and a ZDnet Editor's Pick, etc. rating.

It is a good sign that Unerasor can see the partitions,
etc. so after checking out Restorer2000, if it looks
like the better of the packages, you might want to go
for it, as it is better to try to get the information
and fail, than not try at all; same result.
