As you must know, Glamorgan are trying to sell the name of their
cricket ground in Cardiff (Wales), presently known as Sophia Gardens,
in honour of Sophia Loren.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/cricket/counties/glamorgan/5388084.stm

The word on the grapevine is that, because the unglamorous Glams are
near the bottom of every League Table under the sun, Sophia has
demanded the change to expunge the blemish from her otherwise good
name.

Be that as it may, can anyone suggest a suitable name for a very
unfashionable ground that is home to a very unsuccessful team?

Enron Gardens, Berchtesgaden, and Dante?s Inferno have already been
suggested but they don?t fully convey the awfulness of the place and
its team.

Over to you!

My thanks to everyone for their efforts, as poor as they are.

I now have pleasure in announcing that Probonopublico is the Winner!

And PB's Winning Entry was:

The Unglamorous Morgue

It should be a big hit, comparable to The Ashes.

Well done, PB, we are all very proud of you.

I agree with Sophia. A cricket pitch is an oval, a feminine symbol,
but it is also very flat, plane, plain, none of which apply to Ms
Loren.

Ah, but maybe she is being overly touchy and ego centrical, perhaps
Sophia Gardens is really named after Prince Edward's wife.

These days, many sporting arenas are bearing the name of a firm, one
that doesn't care so much about the activities, just wants to have its
name mentioned.

Maybe the Red Dragon FM station or S A Brain brewery would be interested ...

They should do what Americans do:

Sell it to the highest bidder. It takes away any possibility of creativity.

This has resulted in gems like the 3Com Park, Monster Park and the
latest that I've heard of, the Arizona Cardinals' University of
Phoenix Arena. Yes, a professional football team will have an arena
named after a college!

And there actually WAS an Enron Field in Houston (and its name was
quickly changed after the unfortunate events of a few years ago).
