I am ideally looking for a database that contains "heating days" and
"cooling days" data for the 50 contiguous US states for the past ten
years. 2002 is not necessary but the data must reach at least to 2000
and start in the early 90's. Failing the "heating/cooling days" data,
temperatures will do (the more detailed the better). Thank you.

Hi,

The National Climatic Data Center has charts that provide the
information you need.

Historical Climatography Series No. 5-1 State, Regional and National
Monthly Heating Degree Days 1971 - 2000
http://www5.ncdc.noaa.gov/climatenormals/hcs/HCS_51.pdf

Historical Climatography Series No. 5-2 State, Regional and National
Monthly Cooling Degree Days 1971 - 2000
http://www5.ncdc.noaa.gov/climatenormals/hcs/HCS_52.pdf

Heating and Cooling Degree Day Data contains only the more recent
data.
http://lwf.ncdc.noaa.gov/oa/documentlibrary/hcs/hcs.html#overview5-1

Heating information runs from July 1993 through February 2002.
Cooling information runs from January 1994 through February 2002.

The data is available at no cost in PDF files.

search terms used: United States heating cooling days energy

Good luck with your future searches.

Yeah, I found that data shortly after I posted the question. Oh well.
Now, notice that the 1971 to 2000 data is averaged in year blocks
(ie: 42-00, or 71-00) and not individual years as I asked. The other
data though is precisely what i asked for.
