Hello puzzle You and I think the question's funny, but in the past people found the death watch beetles' mating habits creepy. The sinister noises in the walls of the house seemed particularly noticeable when someone was sitting up at night by a sickbed and so the sound became associated with a 'death watch'. "The adult males strike their heads against the wood as a mating call, making sounds which can be heard on still nights." Oxford Paperback Encyclopaedia http://www.xrefer.com/entry/213942 They mate in the spring, either within the wood where they hatched or after emerging from it. Full description of reproduction for death watch beetles: http://www.bodley.ox.ac.uk/dept/preservation/training/pests/watch1.htm Hope this helps - do ask for clarification if necessary.
