Is not having renters insurance a cause to break the lease when it's
required according to the lease. In the lease it says "The tenant is
required to maintain a tenant's insurance policy at all times. A copy
of the policy is to be provided to the landlord at the time of
occupancy. Failure to maintain insurance coverage is cause for
termination of the tenancy."

I did get the lease but i never give any copy to the landlord. Now
that i have to move out because i got fired, i am wondering if
canceling my renter's insurance will break the lease for me.

Thanks for all you good people.

That would depend on whether the insurance carrier is bound to tell
the Apartment Manager if your policy is cancelled (for whatever
reason). If so, and they do, the Apartment would most certainly demand
that you comply and get another policy, or be forced to move. This
would not happen overnight though. Read your Rental Lease Agreement
carefully, there may be a stipulation that if you do not aquire and
maintain Renter's Insurance, that the Apartment can purchase a policy
for you and add it to your rent.

actually there is nothing on the lease that says anything to the
effect that if I do not aquire and maintain Renter's Insurance, then
the Apartment can purchase a policy for me and add it to my rent.

HI,
I am sorry to hear about your problem.
The situation may depend on the state's law on landlord/tenants.
Failure to maintain insurance coverage CAN be a cause for termination,
but that is at the discretion of the landlord. As I understand your
question, you have the insurance but have not provided the landlord
with a copy of the policy (not the "lease"), that is to say, the
landlord has till now not bothered with the formality.
Furthermore, termination for failure to maintain the insurance,
doesn't mean a simple out - cancellation of the lease with no further
conditions. If you want toe break the lease, the terms of the
contract and the provisions of the law will apply.
