I have just bought a condominium apartment in Manhattan. I am
currently renting another apartment in Manhattan with a lease due to
expire in 4 months. I would like to end this lease as I don't want to
bear the financial burden of paying both my new mortgage interest
expenses and my current rent. I have checked the lease contract and it
does not specify whether I can break my current lease if an apartment
is purchased. Somebody told me that there is a law in New York City
which states that if you buy a flat, you can end your lease. Can you
please advice me on my options?

Many thanks

Your best bet is to talk to your Landlord and see if there is any flexability
on breaking the lease. There is however no onus on the landlord to do this.
regarding your statement about ending the lease if you buy a Flat: I doubt it!

But then I am no expert on New York tenancy law. You may wish to talk
to a lawyer knowledgeable on the subject.

If rents in your area have increased, the landlord could agree to let
you cancel the lease early. Talk to him.
