I am looking for consulting/market research companies located in the
Northeastern US, with the following characteristics:

1. Perform high-quality market research on business-to-business,
industrial product-type markets -- i.e., they know the industry,
players, trends, opportunities, etc.

2. Focus on a specific industry niche, or niches.

3. Most likely are a small firm (i.e., under 15 employees), but not
necessarily.

4. Is NOT a non-profit association or sub-set of one.

There are a number of very focused firms, some of which publish
multi-client studies. It sounds as if you're seeking one for a
specific type of industrial market. Researchers can probably pin one
down with experience in the particular market, if you can identify it
more closely.

Best regards,

Omnivorous-GA

Based on your comments about focus and multi-client studies, I think
you are on-target with regards to the type of firms we are looking
for.

However, we are not interested in one specific type of industrial
market. We are intersted in identifying many of these firms, across
different niches.

Best regards,

KJ

Hi thanks for your question. Just to clarify.

a. Would any part of the US be acceptable and not just the Northern
part?
b. Next. Are you looking for makers of customized industrial market
reports like the ones Jupiter Research makes but for this time for
different industries?

Just let me know. :)

I've put together a list for you from a variety of industry sources,
including my own market research bookmarks. While I can't swear that
all of these companies follow "industrial" companies, I know many of
them first-hand from work with computer/electronic/software companies.
All of the computer-industry companies are more than 15 people, the
public companies being quite large.

Specifically excluded were consulting organizations, which may in fact
specialize in particular businesses. Also excluded were services
companies, such as focus group experts.

Omnivorous,

The last two firms you sent me are interesting (Business Trend
Analysts and WinterGreen Research, Inc.), in addition to Forecast
International. The rest on the list are too IT focused and/or too
large.

Can you find me more like the three above?

KJ

I've been through a bunch of lists (at least 10, including doing
searches by state). I'll see what else I can assemble. Notoriously
missing are vertical market companies that track narrow industries
(say machine tools).

It might be helpful if I knew a little more about the product or
service that you're aiming at them. Or why small size is important.

Thanks. The "notoriously missing companies" (i.e., the vertical market
companies that track narrow industries) would be of the most interest.

My services complement the type of work these firms do, i.e., I can
leverage their industry knowledge and, in return, create a new revenue
stream for them.

In my experince, it is typically easier to devlop a working
relationship/alliance with a smaller firm.

It's helpful. I'm going to try a different tack for you -- looking at
some industry segments where there should be some consulting breadth:
-- machine tools
-- manufacturing equipment
-- water treatment

etc.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. You can tell my
computer/electronics background from the list generated! One company
that's probably prime for you (not too large, not too small) would be
Probe Research.

Thanks for your help. Below are some manufacturing industry segments
of interest, by 3-digit NAICS code:

323 Printing and Related Support Activities
325 Chemical Manufacturing
326 Plastics and Rubber Products Manufacturing
332 Fabricated Metal Product Manufacturing
333 Machinery Manufacturing
335 Electrical Equipment, Appliance, and Component Manufacturing
336 Transportation Equipment Manufacturing
339 Miscellaneous Manufacturing

Thanks again,

I don't want you to think that we've forgotten about you. Quite the
opposite. I've been through chemical and printing research companies
and added 10 in your target area. It will take several more hours to
get through the other NAICS codes.

A couple of other update notes:
1. We're concentrating on market research companies. Should you wish
to expand to consultants -- who number in the hundreds -- you might
consider hiring a high school or college student to do the screening.
2. I can publish the final list here or put a Word2000 document on a
website for you to retrieve. If the latter's more convenient please
let me know.

There are about a dozen additional firms that I could find. I
followed a pair of search strategies:
1. industry + "market research" -- meaning that the real search was:
    printing + "market research"
2. used a market research guide to highlight the relevant NAICS codes

One of the harder things to do is judge company size. Large firms are
either public or make that information known; not so for small firms.
This list contains some divisions of good-sized companies.

Again, I've listed them by state (only because I started that way!)
This list has no duplicates from the earlier one.

The Word2000 document is at the address below:
http://www.lucidmatrix.com/uploads/mktresearch.doc

Most of these are in the printing/chemical/plastics areas. There are
very few in the transportation, electrical equipment and machinery
manufacturing areas.

Thank you for using Google Answers -- and let me know if we've met
your needs.

Your search has a simple solution at the Market Research Association
website. The have a MR Bluebook that lists companies by state and by
specialty, so that you can do a select for:
Massachusetts + full service research + industrial

and get precisely what you're seeking (there are two companies).

Direct access to the Bluebook is:
http://www.bluebook.org

If this answers your question, you may wish to close this question so
as not to be charged.

I looked into the Market Research Association website, and the
companies that came-up in my search by state and by specialty, were
not that intersesting. Most were not really focused in a particular
niche or niches, more focused on function, e.g., focus-groups, calling
house, etc.

Please keep trying.

Thanks,

Taylor Nelson Sofres (aka TNS-Intersearch of just Intersearch) in
Horsham PA has very specialized sector expertise in a variety of
industry areas (telecommunications, fashion, IT, health, etc.). They
are not small but they have acquired small specialized companies such
as INDETEC, PNR Associates (Jenkintown, PA), etc. which specialize in
single industries. You will have to dig into their website to find
the specialties but they may have what you are looking for.
